Topics I've Started

  1. Why Episode 3 Will be Awesome

    Posted 9 Apr 2005

    (1) Both TPM and AOTC sucked primarily because they were totally useless. Anakin Skywalker's story simply did not require a trilogy to tell and GL simply made it a trilogy because, well, that's what he did the first time around....wouldn't you screw around for two movies for 3 billion dollars in revenue?

Amazingly, Anakin Skywalker's story really isn't even spread out amongst the three movies....the entire story is crammed right here in ROTS! Both TPM and AOTC were just killing time.

(2)Lucas was holding the good shit in for this. Old George Lucas (no relation to Young George Lucas) might be a pompous prick, but he's not an idiot. He understands the idea of "rising action" when telling a story, which just means that the story gets bigger and grander with each successive event. We all know there was nothing grand about TPM or AOTC (well, the music in TPM and that hurricane planet in AOTC, but let's not get too picky), and that's because Lucas was saving ALL the good shit for this. The best fights, the best planets, the best action tricks....it's all been pent up like a kid reading porn in a classroom. And ROTS is like what happens when that kid gets into his bedroom after school.

    (3) Obi Wan vs. Anakin. Hey, no matter how much Old George Lucas has fucked up the relationship between these two, it's still going to be bad ass. Just watching the two actors competing with each other on the DVD documentary lets you know that there is just some primordial rivalry between these two guys. No matter how miserably their dialogue and interactions have conveyed that so far.

    (4) I read the story. It kicks ass. I read it back in November, and I've read it again since the books were released last week. It's awesome. It cannot NOT be awesome. Even if Old George Lucas is doing his damndest to make it just like AOTC, it will still be awesome. There WILL be fodder for critics, most notably Anakin's actual reason for turning to the dark side, but it will be cool anyway.

So no matter how pompous Old George Lucas is, no matter how weird it seems to think that the same guy could make a TERRIBLE movie three years ago and then a GREAT movie now, no matter how much people will accuse you of being trendy or whatever....ROTS will just be awesome.

The only question is whether it will be great or GREAT.
  2. GL: ROTS = 'Titanic'

    Posted 17 Mar 2005

Old George Lucas is sinking to new depths in the name of promoting his latest piece of fluff, and it's a damned shame that nobody has put this fat, old, self-important windbag of pomposity in his fucking place.

He comapred ROTS to Titanic. Immediately afterwards he compared Lucasfilm to Microsoft and "Heir to the Empire" to "War and Peace." (Okay, those last two were jokes.)

Titanic is the #1 movie of all time, and it has already held that distinction for more weeks than Star Wars ever did. It also won the most Oscars of all time, and was at the #1 spot for the most weeks in modern cinema history (since 1982), and is the #1 global movie of all time by an even larger margin than it is the #1 American movie (and it's #1 in the U.S. by such a freakishly large margin that you could fit The Matrix's box office between Titanic and its closest competitor.)

Why the hell didn't James Cameron grab Old George Lucas by his third chin and just start pounding his sleepy-eyed face into his skull, Irrevesible-style? Hey, if I were on the jury, I would vote acquittal!

Seriously, this shit is totally unacceptable. I urge all of you to do as I will do: Buy a ticket for another picture when you walk into ROTS, just as if you're a 13 year-old sneaking into an R-rated picture.

Anyway, wasn't AOTC supposed to be the "dark" and "tragic" part of the PT?

Here's the fucking link (but in lieu of reading the story, I advise you all to instead spend the two minutes staring at a filled toilet bowl - it would be more pleasant): http://channels.nets. ..0&w=RTR&coview=
  3. Award Winning 'Star Wars' Essay

    Posted 14 Feb 2005

Okay, so maybe this "award" isn't quite up there with the Nobel and the Pullitzer, but I hope you'll like it anyway:

  4. Major Criticism for 'Star Wars'

    Posted 26 Jan 2005

In an interview with Reuters, James Cameron made the following criticism of Star Wars:

"As much as I love 'Star Wars,' and as much as it's really revolutionized the imaging business, it went off the rails in the sense that science fiction, historically, was a science fiction of ideas. It was thematic fiction. It stopped being that and became just pure eye candy and pure entertainment."

    ------

In Newsweek's preview of 2005 movies, this paragraph summarized their perception of the American public's perception of TPM and AOTC:

Fans grumbled over the first two prequels. They scoffed at starting Anakin's journey toward evil in childhood and ridiculed the young Jedi's mushy romantic babble....Still, it's hard to imagine fans will not turn out to see Anakin....become the malevolent Darth Vader.

    ------

I don't have any larger point to make here (other than I think James Cameron is in trouble if he honestly thinks that Americans want to see serious science fiction, i.e. A.I. and The Hulk.)

But I think it'll be an interesting experiment watching lovers of Old George Lucas (no relation to Young George Lucas) rant and rave about how AOTC was actually more popular than Titanic.
