True.

And Civilian, you knew what I meant. We're in the prequel hating camp.

Anyway, the article made interesting reading - that's my five cents on that.

Hey, this guy knows JYAMG...

Average moviegoers have never been aware of all that stuff, or really cared -- all they know is that they like Star Wars movies.

I know that you believe you understood what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you read is not what I meant.

Just because this guy can write well and writes a lot about the Phantom Menace does not make his points more valid or true than anyone elses. When he criticizes TPM he steers clear of many of the major issues that makes TPM one of the most horrible movies ever. Also, I find many of his arguments to be nothing but hollow retoric. I agree with Barend on this one:

QUOTE
he's no fool, he just refuses to let go...

The arguments he uses in order to explain why TPM is good are vague concepts and ideas that may sound interesting but are ultimately not at all conveyed in the film! It's like saying: "Well, TPM is about Duality, Symbiont Circles and has a very intricate and complicated plot. And once you understand that, it makes the movie great." He builds his case on the premise that the execution of the movie is not really important, only the underlying concepts. This does NOT build a strong case for his arguments.

He talks about "the many layers of subtext, symbolism and subtlety that are deeply woven into the movie". Disregarding the fact that these qualities he speaks so highly of are pretty vague at best. No matter how clever, emotional and exciting these concepts sound, it is the finished movie that counts!

In conclusion: I think there is a much better Phantom Menace playing in his mind than we got to see on screen.

I was having a conversation with my dad about this yesterday. While he's not a big fan of the prequels either, he thinks that one day the awful dialogue will be viewed as 'amusingly cheesy' in the same way as the dialogue in the OT. I disagree; there is no way lines like 'Are you an angel?' are ever going to be anything other than horribly, painfully embarrassing.

The sandpeople had women and children. We know this because Anakin killed them how could he tell? The children might be smaller but I never saw a sandperson with breasts. Did they hike their skirts and show him some leg or something?

QUOTE
Also, I can see the point of wanting to kidnap a human and use her as a slave, but they didn't. They tied her to a flimsy easel for a month. It's assumed they had to feed and give her water. What for? Was she purely ornamental? I can understand them wanting the droids, you can sell those for a lot of money, but a chick who's only skills are finding non-existand mushrooms and getting randomly pregnant, you're not going to get much.

I disagree. I think they were concrete laces on the concrete boots, over the concrete socks that covered its concrete coated concrete ankles. wink.gif

...concrete CANKLES!!!

But, where were we.... oh yeah. I am surprised though that a website like this didn't crop up sooner. I find a LOT more "I hate Star Wars" or "I hate Jar Jar" sites than glowing, loving, Lucas-butt-kissing sites...

Battle for the Galaxy--read the "other Star Wars"

All I know is I haven't seen the real prequels yet.
