QUOTE
Gangs used Internet to plan street fight
Thursday, May 13, 2004

DALLAS, Texas (AP) -- In a computer-age version of "West Side Story," rival gang members battled it out in the street in a rumble organized over the Internet.

Nearly three dozen people, including 27 high school students, were arrested this week after being indicted in the March 3 brawl in Garland, a Dallas suburb. Several people were injured, including one person who suffered a broken arm.

"Gangs already have their own alphabet, their own language, their own hand signals, so why not use the Internet?" said Tod Burke, a criminal justice professor at Radford University in Virginia. "Is this case unusual? Yes. But what I'm afraid is going to happen, this is probably just the beginning of it."

Apparently their gang colors are 3300CC and FF6633.

That's just sad. Maybe they should let stupid people who feel the need to rumble all the time just go at it and remove themselves from the gene pool...

... probably better all round.

"Just the beginning of it"? Where else is there to go? Suicide bombings scheduled on the internet? Games of tag?

No, it just sounds like there are some really stupid people in Dallas who need to be shown the differences between being part of a group that actually stands for something, and being some miserable twat in a gang.

Oh for fuck sake. Is this news? I'm sure the internet has been used for just about everything now.

Sex, business, chat, reading, entertainment, political campaigning, and now street gang fights.

Big deal someone promoted a fight over the net, this is not the strangest or worst thing that has happened. Why is it news. I'm sure bombings of villages have been planned on the net.

This news forum is great. When you look back at all the ridiculous articles these guys find, it makes you laugh and think that Universities are handing journalisim degrees to these people.

Internet bars. That's a great idea.

It would be like the iLoo, except a bar, not a loo.

OHHHH NOOOO!
The internet is evil. Let's shut it down.

This would have been funnier if it happened in 1987, and they had to use those giant 8 inch floppies and those modems where you put the phone reciever in the suction cup.

It is rare that I agree with Jordan, so today I must act. Jordan is absolutely right. The internet is a tool, and it has been used for everything: commerce, communication, and planning. That it was used by a gang shouldn't really shock anyone, so I think the news story is a bit up in arms over nothing.

I also have to say I think it's a little facile to suggest that we should just let all the people in gangs kill each other and be done with it. To say so seems to presuppose that everyone who joins a gang does so in the interest of being a cool guy or in all the fun and jolly times to be had. Since I'm not a sociologist I can't really say why people join gangs, but everything I have read would suggest it is because of things like social pressures, hopeless economic situations and the feeling that there aren't any other options. Am I saying that these kids in the Dallas suburbs who have access to computers are joining gangs for these reasons? No, I have no idea. But to suggest offhand we let all of "those people" eliminate themselves from the gene pool is, to me, offensive.
