I'm sorry to hear about that, Despondent. A divorce must be a terrible thing to go through and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. It also must be so traumatic to be seperated from someone who you had really wanted to spend the rest of your life with. I'm very, very sorry to hear that indeed.

I guess from what I've heard, 50/50 isn't a bad way to go. I'll still pay for dinner though because at the moment, my girlfriend's at university doing a second degree (and university students do not rake in the big cash) - but honestly, I like paying for her. I wouldn't have it any other way, at least for a while. Maybe after we're married, things might change a little. But that's for later.

It's nice to hear about your children's book though - best of luck with that. I hope it makes you rich too. Yeah, as I've tried to tell the cat lovers on the forum a few times, a dog is a great companion. It's always nice when they welcome you home. They're always happy to see you.

here's my random thought. When I go to the cinema, and I order my ($6.00) popcorn, I always ask them to rake it from (pointing now) where the freshest (right out of the hopper) popcorn is.
But I keep my voice low so everyone else doesn't pull the same thing.

That's a good tip. My trick is to bring a backpack (no-one seems to wonder about backpacks) and smuggle in some fresh home-made popcorn. cool.gif

Sorry to hear about the divorce, but if it was what she wanted, it was probably for the best.

On the point of popcorn-I don't eat popcorn at the movies. I refuse to buy their overpriced food. Why pay $6 for a small popcorn, when I can go to McDonalds or equivilent beforehand and buy an entire meal for the same price, which also includes a drink, which I can take into the movie with me. Or at least, they havent stopped me yet.

McDonalds must be different in America from Australia and Korea. I can't eat McDonalds in either country. However, McDonalds in Japan was pretty good.

I remember it in Japan as being the same as it is in Australia, except that they'd make you're burger to order.

Hmm... I don't know why but it seemed a lot better in Japan. Although, I only ever ate McDonalds when I was in Shibuya. Perhaps that was just a particular good McDonalds. Or maybe it was the fact that one of my students worked there... and perhaps I got priviledged treatment. cool.gif

Sime Sublime, JYAMG; thanks for the support. I really like this forum and had reservations about opening up myself, but there seems to be a nice community and that's why I return. I appreciate that, one and all.

got a letter from a good friend and he expressed a quote along the lines of: at times like these you decide to really start living or you choose to die. I'll grasp hold of the former, thank you.

I don't mind (terribly) paying the $6 for the popcorn because it's a large (generous, ever-flowing actually) bag, with free refills. So a bud and I can share Hot! Fresh! popcorn (I love popcorn at the movies. Yes, even during the Jesus film,) and If I want to take home leftovers (keeps well in the frig') I tote my bag back to the concessionaire. (personally, I pass on the "hot butter")

Mickey D's serves a nice fountain coke. and I like the Filet-o-fish. slighty gummy, but tasty

You're welcome. I hope everything will get easier for you as time goes on. And I think you've taken the right approach to it. Still, I'm very sorry to hear about it all.
Hang in there.

At least it sounds like you're carrying on with life ok. My parents were really shattered by their divorce, so I'm glad you're comfortable enough about it to open up on here. As JYAMG said, "hang in there". Hope things look up for you in the future.

that's the worst thing i ever heard...
(but the visual in my mind mad me laugh)

I open doors for whomever needs it, i determine the evacuation of my seat on a case by case analysis, I am polite to all yet devistatinly brutal to people who are rude to me, however...

chivalry is outdated. i think it's patronizing. why should anyone be the one to always pay for meals? back in the 50s when only men worked (and by that i mean paid!) it was fair enough but the whole womens lib movement was about women prooving they could take care of themselves. and everytime we give up a seat or pay for a meal it seems like we are disagreeing...

i buy girls icecreams and things like that, but meals i think is a bit silly.

don't get me wrong, I do offer from time to time...

as for seats... well i i see someone who needs it more than me yeah.
but i hate the fact that young women don't give up their seat old people... what excactly did they do deserve such a right anyway?

everyday some women in her 50s will walk up the whole isle of a bus while no one offeres her a seat and then i get death stares from everyone else... why is it always me??? So I've raised the age bracket to 70!!!
-----------------------------------------------------------

as for music. nobody is into the stuff i'm in so i'd get screwed with your idea... but making suggestions is a good idea.
hmmmm... the australian idol wiinner guy sebastions new pepsi album?
may i recomend Napalm Death? Skinny Puppy? Slayer?

Re: Being chivalrous to women...

Yeah, I understand where you guys are coming from. I'll clarify a bit - for me, if you're taking a girl out for a special occasion to someplace nice, I think it looks a lot better if you pay for the meal. In my relationship, at the moment, I'm the only one who's earning money as my girlfriend is at uni again so it's a different situation from a lot of you guys.

I understand your frustration, Barend. I think the universal code of giving up your seat for other people should involve your proximity to the person in need of a seat. The reason it often falls down to people like us to give up our seats is because of the large number of people who don't follow the code at all. In Japan, I felt like my friend and myself were the only people who gave up our seats for old people and women. As for seating priority, the elderly, pregnant women and people with serious injuries are first. Women next. Healthy young men next - and school children who are getting on at half-price last.

Hmmm.... we better put you on one of the panels then.

no, that was a proposed pitch to a customer who prefers pepsi driven CDs to actual music like ND, SP, & Slayer.

more importantly I fell victim to the quick response feature and missed a page or two of coversation...

soorry 'bout the EX despondent. I just noticed tht post.

but it brings to mind another question... why do women almost always get half or more of the guys money...

my uncle in Holand had his wife run off with another man, SHE filed fordivorce on the grounds that she had 'grown bored' of the relationship.
It was actually my father who suggested that there was probably another guy involved... and he turned out to be right. the courts decided that SHE have custody of their adopted daughter and further more that he pay 70% of his income to his Ex-wife.

how the fuck does that work...?

but it leads me to another thought...

the thing that sucks most about breaking up, is that the last time you're together is before the break up... you don't get to savor your last moments with the proper attention! which is why I think when someone dumps someone they should have to give two weeks notice.

I can only hope that this flaw in Holand's legal system is not something that occurs in the legal system of other countries. That is unjust in the most extreme sense of the word.

My supervisior at one of my casual jobs was mentioning yesterday that she used to be something akin to a sternographer, and was telling us some of the things that had happened in family court. A lot of it was quite sad. There were a few cases wherein the father wanted to look after the child/ren, but they were sent to live with the mother who didn't want them on account of her being a woman(I don't know how long ago this was, by the way). Or even worse, there were some cases where neither parents wanted the kids. Really sad stuff.

I belive people should require a license before they become parents.

I know a barister who is paying 80% to his ex-wife.

although that still leaves him with about AUD$2000.00 a week...
you have to wonder how she managed to convince any court that $8000.00 a week was 'just enmough' to raise two kids...

i mean really!!! that's totally grade-A BULLSHIT!!!

how did she justify that? and honestly how much of that is really going to the kids...

i'm never, repeat NEVER getting married.

the whole institute seems do be based on taxing the hell out of me...
here's what i have to do in so-called ideal fairytale existence...
I have to build up the courage to ask the girl out.
I have to pay for her meal
I have to buy her flowers
I will have to resolve every argument without being told what the problem is or being alowed to ask what the problem is...*
I have to spend at least 4 months wages on an engagement ring
I have to risk humiliation by asking her to marry me
I have to buy a home for us
I will probably have to pay for the wedding
I will have to spend god knows how much on a wedding ring
(which brings up the question, do i have to but 2 - one for me?)
I will pay for most things, untill she inevitably decides shes more attracted to some guy she met at a nightclub, or a friend of mine, or some guy she previously wanted to go out with but just became available.
I will have my heart torn out
I will have the pleasure of financing her new relationship for the rest of my life while i live on 20-30% of my pay.
I will have to get over my newly developed but justified 'trust issues, and ask out another girl just get screwed over again.

sounds great!!! count me in...
shea!

(*i just threw that in for spite)
