Some nerds have build a full-scale rocket powered X-wing, complete with an R2D2. It actually flies (the X-wing, not the R2D2). Here's a link, which curiously doesn't actually show any photos of it actually flying:

They're planning on a test flight on Oct 10. The Burns Unit at the local hospital is standing by.
PS. Chef: amusing captions still MIA.

Presumably, they'll all have walking black lung machine technology in storage for this event.

"*breathing* Yes, master. Wow, this is wicked! Even though I've gotten 95% of my body covered in gruesome burns, I'm totally Darth now! Impressive..."

Awesome developments for humanity.
And to think that scientists are wasting their time trying to find a cure for cancer.

But let's be honest, it's not as if these folks have the necessary skills to contribute meaningfully to the fight for a "cure for cancer." You'd have to take them back in a time machine so they could go to medical school instead of going into rocketry or engineering or whatever it is they specialize in instead.
If you meant that the money they spent on this project should have been donated instead to cancer research, you might have a point, but then you could argue that of just about anything people spend a bunch of money on... like collecting Star Wars merchandise!
I guess they could sell tickets to the launch and donate the money to charity, but that's about it for now.

Poor Porkins.
Diverting resources Stopping a cure for cancer? Perhaps, although iPods, cellular phones, pamper-yourself cosmetics, sports, YouTube, TV, religion, pr0n, Halo, billionaires making balloon rides and political pork-barrelling cost far more. Interesting the trade offs people make without being aware of it.
"Sir, would you rather invest in YouTube or curing cancer?"
"Why *YOUTUBE* of CoUrSe!!!"

The other assumption is that all that is stopping a cure for cancer is lack of funding, that would be provided by not spending the money on those other things.
By that logic then, everyone is a selfish dolt for spending money on anything non-essential (read: luxuries and entertainment) rather than donating it to cancer research.
