actors/actresses too old for sequels they should stop while the series is good.

seems like recently there has been a flood of sequel films, across various genres-mostly action though, in which certain characters reprise their roles to continue the storyline in the trilogy/saga.
such films that come to mind are:
Terminator 3
Live Free or die hard (die hard 4)
lethal weapon 4
rocky balboa (rocky 6)
im sure there are many others that are escaping my mind at this moment. pretty much all the aforementioned films in their respective sagas had key films that at one point were deemed as cash cows in hollywood. naturally, when that happens it gets the undivided attention of hollywood studios to spawn sequel after sequel until the idea is burned out completely.
sometimes such sequels are released right away, other times there is quite a noticeable time elapse in which when the actor/actress finally stars in the next installment, they have aged quite considerably.
with age being a factor, its assumable that stunt doubles are often used in many scenes that would require them. this is not to say that all actors/actresses who have aged require stunt doubles, in fact, jackie chan never had any problems doing his own stunts..he in fact would be a rare exception to this.
but aside from that, most others are reprising roles that are dead, or re-hashed. there really isnt much of a storyline to be told, and its all pretty much predictable most of the time.

Star Wars is only *one* story made into a movie. So much more never gets made.
Question: Isn't of making sequels, why don't they make something new?
Answer: Given the choice between new and a sequel Movie-going audience will go for the sequel. We get what they deserve.

im not so sure i agree with that hypothesis. i think its all based on the hype that surrounds a movie. you could have a movie about talking green worms that play dead, and if it gets the right hype, promotionals, etc..it will fair out well at the box office.

i just saw the preview for die hard 4. brucew willis looks fine. harrison ford is definatley on the older side of things but i'm sure he'll play that up as he did in that cop film he did. ford rocks, and i'll still go see it.
silvester stallone looks ridiculous as rambo and i'm embarrassed for him.
as much as i'm not planning to see rocky balboa, it's far more justified.
I'm sick to death of tring to swallow pretty boys who haven't been alive long enough to have the experience to be beleivable action heroes.
i would rather watch an old guy use his years of experience in spite of some aging alments than a 17 year old kick the ass of 100 trained professionals.

I'll qualify it. Movie executives think that given the choice between new and a sequel Movie-going audience will go for the sequel.

Of course, but if you start with a sequel, it's so much easier: Easier to sell someone something they already know than to sell them something new. This is why so many people walk into McDonalds rather than Guido's Hamburger Bar. Oh yeah people like to think they'd prefer Guido's nice little Ethnic Hamburger Bar, but it's so much easier to eat and order (and watch) what you know.
How many Spiderman/Superman/Raiders/StarWars movies are they going to make? Movie Executives may think this makes it a no brainer for people to choose, but I figure I've seen so many damned Spiderman I don't need to see any more. Life is short enough.

Post 911 Bruce volunteered to join the US Army. They turned him down: "Too Old." Bruce was really hurt: "I'm disappointed because I have great leadership skills." My thoughts: "Umm... Bruce, that was acting. Not the same thing." True story.

I liked his quote when they announced this: "The belt might not fit but the hat still will."
Harrison Ford can probably pull it off (the role I mean). No one ever accused him of taking himself too seriously.

Too right. The people who changed the world were old. Young ones think you can change the world by sheer force of will. Old ones knows it's not that easy, and better yet, with experience they understand the how. (Sweeping Generalization. I know you're thinking of an exception.)

lets not forget about new film franchises that are intended specifically to kill off and replace old franchises.
like: XXX and Bourne Identity/supremacy/ultimatim, & Transporter trying to kill off the 007 Bond franchise

Sean Connery was too old for Bond in Diamonds are Forever.
Heck, he was too old and flabby for the role back in You Only Live Twice!
Roger Moore looked like a desiccated corpse in his last two Bond films (Octopussy, A View to a Kill). Hint to action stars: If you're starting to look like a deceased 90-year-old version of your plum role, stop making movies!
Oh, and Pierce Brosnan reminded me of Steven Seagal (the old, puffy one, not the judo master) in Die Another Day. Man, if I had the time and a sledgehammer...

ha ha! you crack me up ...right as you mentioned the steven seagal being old, puffy..it reminded me of that fat guy on Mad TV that slicks back his hair and always squints his eyes when he does his parody impression of Seagal.
Also, I was like 7 years old or so when Octopussy first came out in theatres. In fact, I remember seeing a commercial on TV advertising Octopussy, and I thought to myself...
"OHHHH....they said PUSSY on TV!!...thats bad...they said PUSSY!!!"

Yeah, Seagal might have been great once, but now he's the Pilsbury Doughboy in training.
