Scotland invents deep-fried chocolate sandwich

Scotland's latest culinary delicacy - the deep-fried chocolate sandwich, promises to be one of the world's fattiest snacks.

The 1,000 calorie sandwich first appeared on the menu at an Edinburgh hotel, selling for £4.95. But it's now available throughout the country.

The sandwich consists of two slices of white bread smothered in chocolate sauce, dipped in batter and deep-fried. It's then covered in sugar and more chocolate sauce and served with vanilla ice-cream, says The Times.

Debbie Walter, food and beverage manager of the Ramada Jarvis Hotel, where the sandwiches were introduced, said they had proved popular with Scots, who favoured fattening desserts over fresh fruit and low-fat options.

She said: "The sandwiches are delicious. Also, if we sold only fresh-fruit salads we wouldn't have any customers. The healthiest food on our menu is a winter fruits soup - and it is our worst seller."

"Yup, that's right! Five whole sandwiches! And the doctor said the blockage wasn't even that bad!"

Maybe we can use the sandwich against Al Qaeda. That'll kill em off faster than any bomb. I feel bad that the Scots are gonna die though.

Also I love the fact it said "invent". He put 2 slices of bread together, covered it in chocolate, fried it, covered it with more chocolate and ice cream. I wouldn't put that on part with, oh, say, the lightbulb. He created it, he concocted it, but I wouldnt' exactly call him an "inventor."

Imagine that! As if anyone would prefer fresh fruit over a fatty dessert.

Fried candy bars are gaining popularity here in the States. I ate at a restaurant last year that served battered and friend twinkies with ice cream. You had to sign a waiver before ordering them.

Just for the record: they were DELICIOUS!

The Tim Horton's chain of coffee shops has excellent chocolate croissants. They aren't croissant-shaped, but they're still quite tasty.
