Man campaigns for elections with rat in mouth

An Indian man is campaigning for the country's national elections by holding a live rat in his mouth.

Jai Shankar has been going around with the rodent in his mouth in his constituency of Tamil Nadu.

He says he is doing this to highlight the plight of starving farmers.

The student doesn't expect to win and says he only wants to do something different to attract the attention of voters.

He said: "The rat doesn't bother me. I have heard that farmers in far-flung areas have survived by eating rats."

The 28-year-old is an independent candidate for the Perambalur seat.

He says farmers on the Cauvery river delta are on the brink of starvation because of drought and have been jobless for three years.

Mr Shankar, from Thuraimangalam, claims he is not worried about catching any disease.

He told newspaper Hindustan Times: "Rats are running all over the place. If this runs away, I can always find another one."

I'm not sure what to think.

Um... me neither. He is making a strong point about the plight of the people on one hand. But on the other hand, carrying a live rat in your mouth is .... ah....

I don't really think I need to keep going down that train of thought.

Holding a live rat in your mouth takes some sort of dedication. Think about it. That can't be easy.

Don't the starving farmers also feel like they are being mocked?

It certainly does take a lot of dedication and conviction. I just wonder what other Indian people might think about it when they see it.

I think it should be medication before dedication.
