Georgia House Bans Genital Piercings
Thursday, March 25, 2004

ATLANTA (AP) -- Genital piercings for women were banned by the Georgia House Wednesday as lawmakers considered a bill outlining punishments for female genital mutilation.

The bill would make such mutilation punishable by two to 20 years in prison. It makes no exception for people who give consent to have the procedure performed on their daughters out of religious or cultural custom.

An amendment adopted without objection added "piercing" to the list of things that may not be done to female genitals. Even adult women would not be allowed to get the procedure. The bill eventually passed 160-0, with no debate.

Amendment sponsor Rep. Bill Heath, R-Bremen, was slack-jawed when told after the vote that some adults seek the piercings.

"What? I've never seen such a thing," Heath said. "I, uh, I wouldn't approve of anyone doing it. I don't think that's an appropriate thing to be doing."

The ban applies only to women, not men. The bill has already been approved by the Senate but now must return to that chamber because of the piercing amendment. Both chambers of the Legislature must agree on a single version of a bill before it can go to the governor for final approval.

But men can still have theirs done, which is even more disturbing than the female piercing to begin with.

Why! What is the possible reasoning other than they think it's gross?

Man, if I was a woman I'd go to Georgia and get it done, just to challenge such an absurd decision.

Ridiculous. Infuriating.

Atlanta Airport has a reputation for being very fast, they did not want to lose this due to all these things setting off metal detectors.

i'm sure enough votes will have it amended to allow for piercings.

i think it's inhumane that people have their daughters "circumsised"
so i give a thumbs up to that descision.
I'm sorry but I don't care what religeon you are or how old it is! forced supression of other people without permission or through threat of violence is wrong.

besides which, I think women have enough trouble finding someone to satisfy them, without it being a medical imposibility.

If I understand you correctly, barend, you object to body modification performed on children without their consent for the sole reason of tradition. But the law is about so much more than that; it prevents adult women (and ONLY women, mind you) from making decisions about what they want to do with their body. It actively REMOVES rights that women previously had for no reason. No health concern is mentioned, so it is not for the women's own sake (though that would be contraversial too), and it does not affect anybody but the woman herself.

This law sets an alarming precedent. If they can make this kind of trivial decision for women, soon they'll be forbidding them from wearing what they want to wear, taking the jobs they want, being seen by doctors or going out in public without a husband or father. Fuck Georgia!

yes they are a backward bunch...

from the looks of it it was a mistake, but know one should have explained it to him... prudish old inbred fart!!!

but I don't think you can get a warrent to check someones genitals for a metal stud... there's no way they can enforce it.

If they are going to pass a law like that, apply it to both men and women. Genital piercings could be a good way to rekindle the erotic flare between a married couple, who has no doubt got a little tired of the same old style.

Maybe they could argue that piercings could be beneficial for the couples, and as a result, decrease the amount of divorces???? Could work

I would never do it, i would resort to dildos over piercings, but that's just me.

presonally, I don't mind peircings, but even nipple rings seem a little intrusive and obstructive. but then again i've never been with a girl with peircings so who knows, I might like it...
