A while back, Barend brought up the topic of a motorsports forum. I'm in the market for a new car, and have been enjoying the test drives. I've settled on a vehicle which I hope to pick up in two weeks if not before.

On another subject, a car I own that I need to get running again is an American classic, a 1965 Ford Fairlane 500 (2-door, powder blue, 289).

Anyone have advice on how to get an old car running again without causing damage to the fuel system? Want to chime in about your favorite SUV, compact or hybrid? Just want to brag about your top landspeed (was with a buddy who buried the speedometer at 120+ on his folks' Lincoln in high school)? This might be the place.

Very nice car, Despondent! What kind of shape is the body in? And what kind of damage does the rest of the car have, or do you know?

I <3 classic cars... '64-and-a-half Mustang; '60 Camaro, '72 or '69 Stingray, '71 GTO... And who does love any 50's Chevy or T-bird?

I could go on, but I'll stop now...

Thanks, Spoon. It was my Daily driver from 1993 to 2000. Garage kept (all but 5 years of its life), totally restored, new paint in 94; hit twice since. One dent remains, some rust damage, driver's side rear quarter-panel.

AM/FM/Cassette are hidden in the glove box, the interior is in good shape. Runs like a top. New leaf springs. bench seats...
Did I mention I had the front end rebuilt some four times? I don't think it will ever run straight again, even after one more front end job (which is needed greatly).

It was a sad day when I called to cancel my car insurance.

But it would move. And with no post, with all the windows down it was wide open, with lots of air. At highway speeds things in the cabin (papers) would go "zero-g".

Are your rides running? What's the condition? I used to joke that the '65 "came off the line when I did" (fall of '64). Pictures? I'll dig some up. "Rlane", she was called. The F-A-I were missing on rear side badge.

I had a 66 Catalina once - it was my first car. I don't know if I ruined the fuels system in order to get it running though. Mostly because I didnt do any of the getting it to run.

my first flatemate and i bought a 69(possibly 68) Ford Falcon...

my dad had jaguar XJS with a V12 engine...

my moms boyfriend had a Pontiac firebird trans am... (THAT WAS AWSOME) - not sure what year... late 70s i think.

I don't have any of the cars I listed (damn, I wish!), I just love them. My car is an '89 Volvo DL. Woo. Nah, 'tis a good car - a fuggin' tank! And he's got great performance. Faster and better acceleration than a lot of newer sports cars, even. 'Tis my first car, and I paid for everything, and still do. (Those little snobs whose daddies bought them a brand new sports car for their 16th birthday and pay for everything, and yet they cry when Daddy says it's time to start paying for their own gas once they graduate college... Ooh, it pisses me off...)

Tell me about it *sigh*.

I've got a 93 Ford Explorer. Now that thing is a tank! If anything, it can totally take a hit (which has happened to my father). My dad gave it to me to drive (it was a piece of crap then too, probably worth 500 bucks), but I've paid for everything for it since (which has been a ton of stuff).

My dad has an MG that he plans to restore one day. I don't know the year or model, but I know it would look sweet in top condition.

Apparently writing about JM here is his secret weakness. Muwahaha!!!! Now I have leverage over him and am another step closer towards my goal of world domination.

Does anyone else name their cars? Or am I the weird one? My car is affectionately named Sundae Mourning, but usually goes by the nickname, "The Brick." Cuz it's as tough as a brick, kind of brickish in color, the shape of a brick, and trying to park the thing is like trying to park a brick.
