As bad as Jabbas palace may be, you have to admit there is pretty cool stuff in there. Its all very creepy and creative. Theres hidden stuff on the walls, i.e. taun taun head, and there are cool Hutt murals. It must have been fun to work on and its an awesome setting. Too bad it all comes off rather dumb. I wish his henchman were a little more capable and the whole CGI band just liquidated.

It's creepy and creative in a "hey, those are some cool Muppets"-kinda way, but I wish it had actually come across more sinister and menacing. Jabba was supposed to be THE godfather of the galaxy, right? And yet his intimidation factor amounted to, "OK, you stand right in front of me, and I'll feed you to things." So goddamn lazy! I think Jabba himself, being a big ol' slug creature, was a cool twist, but the overall impression of his "criminal empire" was very, VERY underwhelming.

And man, those still shots makes all the puppets and costumes look EXTRA shitty.

Man you are cynical. The movie came out in 1983 give it a break. Jaws looks pretty shitty too, but it was still cool. I dont know what you want from make-up artists. Chill out buddy....

For the most part, the suits and puppets look fine in the movie! The stills just look terribly underwhelming, that's all. And to be honest, a lot of the creatures seem well served by not being on camera much, if at all. Their design is just moronic. One has arms 3 times as long as the rest of his body, another looks like a melting turd, another looks like a walking camel...I want the intergalactic version of the guys from Goodfellas, not Labrynth!

Are you guys saying that it doesnt take imaginaton to make things in cgi? it takes just as much creativity.

This isnt a debate, I was just noting how cool the set probably was. BTW, it is more creative when they did it back then. There was more improvisation and imagination. Its like paint by the numbers versus a landscape.

I was watching that scene in Labrynth the other day where Bowie is singing Magic Dance with the muppets and I thought "where have I seen this before?".

i still think the star wars creatures (and i'm including the wolfman on this one) looked cooler than any other aliens (not including the Alien saga or predator) than other shows or movies with aliens...

they were generally no more or less intimidating than humans.

chewbacca to my eye is the only furry alien that ever worked.

there's that thing with a beak on farscape taht just makes me laugh, and most aliens in the latter Star trek series are laughable....

Duros, Biths, etc they just worked for me.

by ROTJ, i have to admit things started getting less practical... but as little as i wanted them there, ewoks are far more realistic on an evolutionary scale than those long necked freaks... like yarel poof, or those genetic engineers.

Jabba should have had a line in the song. The owner of the place / host ought to have a great relationship with the musicians. I wholeheartedly agree with the above point that less is more. If Jabba had been in the shadows, veiled from observation, he would have been more threatening. Then he'd be revealed and we'd all laugh (Ahh-hhoh hhoh hoh). But of course by now we've been letdown by Jabba a couple of times already. smile.gif

I hope your jokingly remebering lepti nak, when Jabba did sing along with the hodgepodge band of irrascible aliens. He conviently threatened Oola and had a verse at the same time. Just more on the genius that is Jabba, no the genius that is Sir Lucas.... wub.gif

The fact that everybody in the palace went to sleep at around the same time as Jabba simultaniously, in pretty much the same place they stood in all day and either watched dancers or drank, around the same group of people as earlier pretty much shows the one dimensionality of the whole scene and the thought that went into it.

Why did they all fall asleep? What was that about anyways? I never could figure it out.
