I find it hard not to think of Basil Rathbone and the coldly intent look on his face when he's duelling with Errol Flynn in CAPTAIN BLOOD. Be it known that Rathbone was accounted the best swordsman in Hollywood at the time and so duelling for him would have been a professional matter requiring his utmost concentration.

McDiarmid's mugging probably has a few explanations then:

1. It's not a real fight so he can't be intent on anything.
2. Lucas told him that grimacing and snarling is eeeevvvviiiilll.
3. He's being directed by an imbecile, acting with incompetents, a stick in his hand, in front of a frickin' blue screen. He's got to do *something* to amuse himself.
