At first I was happy I'd missed it. then A&E reran the thing right after, so I taped it.

Kind of like a roast, really, from the caustic comments of our heroes. Carrie F. gave her spiel about paying to look in the mirror and having to pay for the rights to her image. A funny bit about spending the second half of her Leia Latent Life, helping Hurl awards GL's way.

Harrison commented on the earlier, funnier movies.

the end had some 10 minute glom fest of everyone Kissing Lucas' chins and thanking him.

Maybe this is posted elsewhere? Will Shatner "sang" "YOUR way" to GL, with stormtroopers doing a kick line. Oh yeah, Ally McBeal was at the head table.

It actually was a pretty nice show. It was clear everyone was having a good time. My favorite moment was probably Billy D. Williams calling Lando Calrissian a "stud" after spending about three seconds trying to think of an appropriate word. You could just tell that "pimp" was going through his mind.

In Lucas' speech, he thanked many people, but I especially liked hearing him thank Coppola for helping him go from someone who couldn't write a word to being "the King of Wooden Dialogue." This got alot of laughs and applause.

I approve. smile.gif

Everyone seemed drunk.

Some of the jokes were really cheesy and sounded like rehashed convention speeches.

Lucas' kids are monsters.

Maroon 5.

BUT

It was a nice retrospective.

Yeah, it was more like a roast. Good for GL. It's nice recognition. Whether you like SW or not, he's changed film culture on a world-wide level.

He hasn't "harmed" film in anyway.. his movies may be bad but they haven't hurt the film industry in anyway.

touche

Of course Cameron says he wrecked the science-fiction movie genre when GL inserted the fantasy element into what, according to Cameron, was supposed to be exploration of science-fact. (But that's another issue altogether.)

i prefer aliens, terminator, and abyss, to anything in the PT.

cameron just sort of went pear shaped with true lies and titanic. but he still gives out some great quotes...

cameron is the metalica of directors, and michael beihn was his cliff burton. everything without him was no where near as good...
(T2 being like the black album, good, but some disagree)

thanks to lucas' attempts in the late 70s and early 80s, many people strived for technical brilliance and pushed the boundaries of special effects, and realism, (cameron included).

his later efforts like the SEs and the PT are who i blame for films like VanHelsing which rely too heavily on CGI. but it also incouraged many to sacrifice the better parts of film making...

Sky captain, i found a little hard to be absorbed into because nothing felt real... which is a shame because the imagary borrows from some of my favorite styles... and i'll watch the whole thing one day... but it could have been more...

thunderbirds was a nother potentially awsome film, but they fucked it by making it about a bunch of kids saving the day...
again this i put on lucas' head. he seems to have put forth the notion that films have to appeal STRICTLY to children and that the adults who made those things of yesteryear so big are to be ignored...

alot of people worship the guy, and rightfully so it seemed at first...
but now people still follow him into a smoking creater that used to be the world of filmmaking...

to quote the spiderman films (also ruined by too much transparent CGI):
"with great power comes great responsibility"

and lucas weilds it irrisponsibly...
