It’s not his humour that irritates and distracts me in Clones but the fact that I couldn’t get past questioning why would a 9-year-old boy, slave or otherwise, build a protocol droid to help his mother around the house? The dictionary definition of protocol is:

noun: (computer science) rules determining the format and transmission of data
noun: forms of ceremony and etiquette observed by diplomats and heads of state
noun: code of correct conduct

Now I don’t care what universe you are from, I don’t think a slave needs training in a code of conduct and it would be most unlikely that Shimi would have been mixing it with heads of state, so why not build her something she could really use. Why – because Lucas made up this drivel.

I'm guessing that the 'protocol' term referred to the way that type of droid could be programmed for a specific task.
In Threepio's case he was an interpretor, hence the ridiculous number of forms of communication Anakin somehow programmed into his memory.

That could be utter crap though and its still a valid point. Why oh why was it even conceived that Anakin built C3PO?!?

He kind of freaks me out a bit as well in Ep1, in his incomplete form. Scarier than the TF's battle droids without a doubt!

I agree. Of all the droids a slave could build, I doubt he/she would build a protocol droid. Foolishness.

I think it was a bad idea to have Anakin build C3PO. But still, the droid was not initially programmed to speak all those languages.

There is a 20 year gap in the timeline, during which 3PO was in the hands of the rebels; we are to assume it was during this time that he was fully programmed with all of his capabilities.

Anakin built a protocol droid probably because it is the most anthropomorphic robot (for companionship?) and most likely the easiest to construct, physically.

There actually is a legitimate complaint here that no one has mentioned. How did a nine year old boy create artificial intelligence??

He didn't create it, he must've bought the components. Only megalomaniac companies have the time and resources to build AI. Most likely they sell it along with all the other droid parts. I guess 3PO got his personality from somewhere though. I'm sure that no one would've sold droid personalities.

Ah, this is where the EU is useful, it can make credible explanation for Lucas's stupidity. Anakin found 3PO out back of Watto's in a junk pile and snuck him back to his house. So all he did was repair him and make him function again, which is a lot more believable than saying he built him from scratch

he should have built her a droid like HK-47, i'm sure a slave would have much better use for an assasin/assault droid than a droid that can tell you which dining utensil is correct to use first when eating Mandalorian sky-lobster with rebublic diplomats and senators.
