In OT characters were all familiar to us, they were archetypes: I watched commentary to SE OT yesterday, and Mark Hamill put it brillinalty - you had a wizard, a farmboy, a cowboy and a princess. If you know who you are, you can act it out, even if the director is shite.

In case of Anakin, and the whole PT  the surroundings are unfamiliar and the character does not know who  he is. Is he good or bad? Not yet determined. Combined with unfamiliar surroundings, it does not work any more.

The same can be said about Padme. Who is she? Elected queeen - we don't know such people. Senator? Politician who is sick of plotting and politics? Jedi Knights who are generals and leaders of army? It does not add up.

Excellent points.

I got no real sense of who these characters were in the prequels. I didn't care about them at all. Their motivations seemed entirely unclear.

I don't think Hayden Christensen and Natalie Portman are especially good actors. There's a certain one-dimensionality to them both. Maybe it's because they're still young and don't have the chops yet. Whatever the case, it seems to me that they were chosen for the Star Wars movies mainly for their looks.

As for Mark Hamill, although he didn't have much success as a screen actor after Star Wars, he has been successful as a voiceover artist.

Gwyneth Paltrow was in Se7en for like 5 minutes.. if your gonna say he was upstaged by someone atleast go watch the movie completely and say someone more reasonable like Morgan Freeman who actually had screen time upstaged him.

Fine, and his portrayal in Troy? Tell me that Pitt was not ridiculous as a metrosexual Achiles and that Bloom, in a more suitable role, still acted poorly nonetheless. He cannot emote through the eyes, he always has this blank expression as though he is recalling his lines.

Actually, chickenshit prince Paris in Troy is probably the only role for which Orlando is suitable, IMO. I almost cheered when he crawled back to Hector for protection after his lost fight. He was perfect as the dandy, empty-headed, pampered prince, only the director did not think twice before putting into his lips lines like "father, as much as you love Troy, I love Helen" sick.gif and this spoilt the picture for me.

I laughed at Pitt, too, he might have prefect body and blonde highlights, but his face reflected the life of debauchery, if anything...

Sometimes actors are like this, they are suitable just for this one special role. Consider Viggo Mortensen, I am pretty sure he won't distinguish himself in anything else after LOTR. Ditto Elijah Wood.

Orlando Bloom was the ideal heart-throb of the new millenium. For one, he was not a spoilt-rotten American superstar like Pitt and Cruise, who nonetheless started to get a bit too old. There was a certain quaint naivety about him, and as long as he won't lose it, directors would cast him in blockbusters.

Hayden, however, should not give up. The boy has potential, it would be a shame if he quitted now...

Exactly. Hayden when allowed to act can, and very well! That whole scene when he encounters Obi at the end is very moving. Mortenson should have been considered for the role for the DaVinci code instead of Tom Hanks. There's still Russel Crowe, the man's man over the pretenders from Clooney to Pitt.

Too bad Crowe suffers from "Brandoitis" and is an asshat

Think he'll blame his professors for holding him back?

I'm glad he wants to do something constructive.

Bana was the only reason to see Troy. He was great in Black Hawk Down and did a good job with his role in The Hulk.

OK, Arm Pitt is a fine actor...but Achiles? come on!
