Does GL not realize that men will often keep secrets from their girlfriends? What the fuck.

I mean if I capped a guy because he cut my mom's cheek the first thing I'd do would probably be hide the body. The LAST thing I'd do is go to my girlfriend and say "Hey baby, you wouldnt believe what I did today!"

The whole scene with shmi made the audience in my theatre start to laugh. i could here cynical comments fom behind my chair and snickering all around. i mean, how horribly cliche! Anakin finds her at the exact instant she dies. she has just enough time to tell him some cliche mushy garbage. how covenient for us! Visibly, she doesn't even have any serious wounds and anakin doesn't attempt to heal her or get her food and water. it was as if he wanted her to die so he could read his lines and get on with the film. It was just stupid. If I were lucas i would have just had anakin find her dead carcas lying on the ground.

Or as I've proposed that he actually finds her okay, but bound, inside the hut and frees her. As they escape, then a Tusken Raider who is shooting at Anakin, accidently hits her, killing her.

I totally agree, and I think Anakin should've never said ANYTHING to Padme at all----his silence, his shutting it up all in side would've been much more dramatic, and him being trapped inside that suit later would be incredibly symbolic.

Well, I concur with you and Hofmarn here, but look at it this way. Since George Lucas doesn't show Anakin slaughtering Sand People innocents, the only way we the audience will ever know is if he tells somebody about it on screen. It's too bad, really, the scene could have been very powerful. There's a bit in "Saving Private Ryan" where the squad is preparing to murder a German prisoner right after a firefight, and get so far as making him dig his own grave before releasing him. The mood of the scene goes from righteous anger (the Kraut has it coming) to horror as the blood cools and the desperate prisoner starts pleading for his life in broken English. Watching Anakin move from angry hackings of Tusken warriors to deliberate hunting down and murder of helpless children would be a very grim scene indeed.

Plus, then Anakin could keep it a secret, which would be a better setup for his more tortured nature in ROTS, as well as explaining why nobody's had him arrested.

Nobody had him arrested because no one cares about sand people. All they do is cause trouble for the other sentinent races on Tattoine. Someone on Tattoine probably gave Anikin a medal for killing them.

Why were the sandpeople sitting around in some silly camp making a lazy attempt at watching while CGI dogs tussled for bones - what happened to the hideous and disturbing Tusken Raiders and their echoing screams of fury... besides, for all Anakin might say he slaughtered them like animals, given how much trouble he had handling termites on Geonosis I doubt that he could take on a camp of gaffe stick wielding nomadic savages who are just as good at hacking things up as Anakin is without copping any damage at all. If he hadn't told Padme, hadn't had a cutaway to Yoda and didn't have Qui-Gon shouting "Anakin! No!" and had simply returned, injured, carrying Shmi and being silent that would have been a better scene.

While we're on the sand people, did anyone notice the sand person yell in ROTS when Obi or whoever mentioned the incident?

Just curious... My friend didn't notice it, and you could probably miss it on opening night cause it's so noisy in the theater.

Back on topic. Don't we all see the contradiction in the scene?? We are supposed to feel some type of twisted remorse that Anakin is slaughtering innocents.... Well they aren't very innocent after beating on Shmi. Whatever they did to her, it ultimately led to her enjoyable death (for me) biggrin.gif I would think that Anakin did the right thing in killing the sandpeople. George Lucas only portrays them as uncaring thieves whos intentions are always malignant. This is not a "first step toward the dark side" in my opinion.

what would have been good is if when anikan get's to the papiermache hut and cuts an opening with his lightsabre... he accidentally cuts shmi in half... or her head an arm off or whatever...

then he'd have himself to blame, thus forcing himself into personel turmoil...

and it would be pretty funny...

I think it would be funny if Anakin grabbed her mom to the speeder bike and when he is taking her to the Lars' home, suddenly she fell from the bike and rolls all over the desert and dies. biggrin.gif

Or if he'd have just found her dead period. Then he could force-choke Padme for keeping him from getting there on time. And of course we know what Obi-wan was doing to him.

Then he could go back and slash on the Lars homestead, beating his future troopers to the task. I'm tired of hearing about how precocious he is. Let's see some overachievement already.

oh yeah: "uh-oh."
