Hmmm actually I don't see why Jedi can't  be a religion. The force adepts are the higher ups, while the rest of us are just normal folks. It's kind of like saying that one isnt a Christian unless they can turn water into wine. If you follow a general idea of Jediic dogma than you're ok even if you cant make your own lightsaber, no matter how hard you try.

Well, the problem with that is that all religions are ostensibly factual - ie their adherents believe that their god/gods exist. Jedi is clearly fictional and since there is no god figure (unless you want to count the Force, which is never attributed any sentient characteristics) it is better described as a philosophy or a creed.

I'm not sure the Jedi system is ever presented as a religion per se in Star Wars, it's a discipline - no more than Kung Fu or Tae Kwon Do is a religion.

That may be so. But Budhism is also a philosophy and that seems to do well enough being accepted as a religion.

We're here, we try to move things with the force, get used to it!

Folks, if you want to invent a "Jedi" religion, why not just go directly to George Lucas' source:

Daoism.

QUOTE
Tao (pronounced "Dow") can be roughly translated into English as path, or the way. It is basically indefinable. It has to be experienced. It "refers to a power which envelops, surrounds and flows through all things, living and non-living. The Tao regulates natural processes and nourishes balance in the Universe. It embodies the harmony of opposites (i.e. there would be no love without hate, no light without dark, no male without female.)"

Okay?

Here's the liar's web site. Notice how retarded he looks in the silly devil horns and scary dagger in hand. I like the mental halloween masks on the faces of everyone else.

They didn't want anyone to know who they are.

Boy that does seem like something we should all consider joining. heheheh

Lame.

civilian_number_two,

"-PS: Religious debates ought to be in the debate club.-"

Probably but then part of the debate is that Jedi and Sith concepts are a religion and to prove/debate that people would have to bring up Star Wars related crap.

That element of this might not go very far though.

You might not have wanted to add your own comments about religion while saying it doesn't belong here. Kinda ruins your right to protest when you join in.

You mean the bit about the Robert Shaw movie, right? You might have taken my post too seriously, or not understood it in the first place; I'm not sure.

However, you're right: the business about Sith and Jedi has gone out the window. Where I made a little crack about how it's silly to make up religions based on action films (perfectly on topic), you have launched into a total nonsense attack on the unassailable and divinely inspired Church of Satan. Odd that I was able to see that coming. I may have some Jedi in me! Anyhoo, may whatsisname have mercy on your soul, or whatever.

Sorry, Azryan; I would never delete your posts. After moving them to the debate club (snce they have nothing to do with STAR WARS or "Jedi" as "religion"), I forgot to leave a note. To continue discussing the idea of "Jedi" as "religion," post here. To discuss Satanism and Ayn Rand, post HERE!

You should have just moved the stuff in the first place then. When you made your comment that it didn't belong, but didn't do anything till later.

Interesting riff from Orson Scott Card on the whole "Jedi as Religion" piece here, by the way.
