This is a topic where people can ask what people thought of them when they first came here. Nothing said in this topic can go anywhere else or be brought up or held against someone, by order of me and, I'm sure, by Jane's BFK (Just to add oomph to that threat) but yeah, ask away. I'd like to know myself.

JM - you got to be joking, right? Do you want people to tell what they thought of each other? I think you should seriously reconsider this proposition.

Firstly, if I want to say something specific like, oh, gosh, I really loved this guy named Laughlyn when he first came here, because he fitted the old band perfectly, I pretty much say it, if not directly, then indirectly.

If I have something against someone, either I say it, if I see someone has potential, or I ignore it.

Sometimes people make blunders out of sheer ignorance about forum rules - and later on they turn out to be ok - do you really want to tell such people your first impression? How nice is that?

On the other hand - I would rather not hear that when I first came here people thought me to be an arrogant wimp, or worse. Surely, it is nice to hear nice things about youself, but are you sure it is always nice things?

All in all, this is not such a great idea of yours. pinch.gif

I'm guessing the origin of this topic lies in Bigspiffy introduction thread, with all the Q&A's on favourate Chefelfer, who'd you most like to sleep with, etc.

When I saw this thread this morning my mind did go along similar paths the Madam Corvax's post. I don't think anyone creates the best impression when they first arrive, out of lack of understanding of board politics. People naturally overact elements of their personalities when they first post, partly for an introduction, partly due to the need for a reply.

Stuff like this is more likely to force cards onto the table and cause trouble than it is to massage anyone's ego. I doubt even he BFK could undo the damage from what people might post here.

You honestly expect this to work?

I find it an interesting idea. In my opinion, first impressions are quite often wrong, but it can be funny to see just how wrong you were about people, or how wrong they were about you.

Well yeah, I suppose it's a double bladed sword, But Laughlyn's right in pointing out the origins of this thread. I thought that if we all knew what we were thinking when our friends first popped up or what people thought of us, it would help us to accept new people more easily as long as they're not, you know, completely batshit or something. I was hoping it could be done without antagonism because we all know that we get along now, and what we all thought at first, whether positive or negative, is not necessarily true. To be honest I'd like to know.

You see, this pretty much confirms my point - stuff like JM is suggesting doesn't really work, ego-massaging way or otherwise.

Lauglyn - I gave you as a positive example here of someone who really fitted from the very beginning. That is what I thought of from the very beginning but I really did not think I needed to spell it out. I pretty much know that you know that I really like you. And you see what happens when I tell this directly - you are not sure if I am joking or taking the mickey or being sarcastic, or even insulting.

JM, I did this experiment on a Girl Guide summer camp when I was 12 - one night we told what we thought of each other . The result was a disaster, tears, broken frienship. But if anyone wants to have a go - try it. I'll be sitting back and watching.

Edit - did you really ask each other who'd you like to sleep with most - gee, how could I have missed such fun!. I have to go through it then...

Personally, I'd have ventured that that reflects more on 12 year-old girls than talking about each other, but thats just me...

In my experience grown men tend to act like 12 year old girls when their egos get bruised. You can say all you like about being thick skinned, but often when the truth hits home, it stays home, and will spill out of this thread regardless.

MC: My apologies, I did find it quite odd to be name checked in that way. The typically aquarian trait of 'read, think, analyse, read again, repeat' kicked in, and as always it resulted in an inconclusive answer. Sorry to forced the point, I'll keep mr paranoia on a leash from now on. blushing.gif

First impressions thread? It's kinda hard to remember or organise into words what my first impressions were like - and even If I could I dont think I would - see all the above arguments, their pretty exhaustive.

so for interest here are the ones i changed my percaeption of...

Rhubarb: struck me as a humorless, unfriendly cow... but know i know here alittle better, i can see that she is actually a humourfull, unfriendly, legend...

Laura: we argued alot at first and she struck me as a PC thug, and I struck her as a big fat redneck... which ever, whatever, we were both wrong, but more importantly she was wrong, and now I wub.gif her...

Madam Corvax: accused me of wearing a wig, so i didn't like her for a while... now i do...

UTF: I never had a problem with... then he went insane...

as for the rest of you... boringly enough, i liked you all, now i like you more...

except floppydisk.

I honestly don't remember what I thought of anybody here. Hell, I don't even remember moving from just my own forums to getting back into the forum addiction that seems to plague us geeks.

Yeah, Rhubs refuses to even contemplating the meanning of the phrase "mince words", let alone go anywhere near it. It took a post or two to get that... Other than that, I've got nothing, and only remember that because it was fairly recent.

I'm always a bit wary of new members, but some have grown on me, and the ones that didn't got the message to bug out, it seems...

I'd be interested to know what people have thought of me. Objective opinions are always interesting to hear.

Can't remember, to be perfectly honest. Most of my early days on the FR forums were spent hugging Mist, and trying to hug Jane. Only exception to that would be when I called the Muses "imaginary friends", and that didn't exactly endear me at the time.
