Penguins can stay gay

A German zoo has scrapped plans to break up homosexual penguin couples following protests from gay rights groups.

The Bremerhaven Zoo had earlier flown in four female Humboldt penguins in an attempt to encourage three couples discovered to be all male to reproduce.

The zoo originally defended the experiment, claiming that the birds were an endangered species, but following protests from gay rights groups, director Heike Kueck has said that the zoo is abandoning the plan.

She said: "Everyone can live here as they please."

Kueck said that it was neither her intention nor possible to separate the gay couples by force and interest them in their new female companions.

She added that the penguins had shown little interest in their new female companions but said that the programme could have been started too late in the year.

Gay groups had earlier protested against "the organised and forced harassment through female seductresses" in an open letter to Bremerhaven's Mayor Joerg Schulz.

I can kind of see being upset if the plan was to forcibly separate the couples, if you were a person who believed that penguins have strong emotional attachments to their mates comparable to humans', but I don't see what the problem is with flying in some female penguins. You know, just to see what happens. Just putting the female penguins there is not necessarily an attack on the relationships which, if stable, should be able to remain so even when meeting new penguins. I mean, people don't protest when women move to SF.

"the organised and forced harassment through female seductresses"

hehehehehe...

hehehe

I can just imagine the slutty female penguins always having to bend over forwards to pick up sardines and giving the gay penguins a good view of their butts.

I was thinking more in the line of them wearing too much makeup and smoking, then breaking off into rather crude swearing when the males ignore them.

at the very least they'd be 'fag hags'...

I'm a bit over the whole gay protest thing.... they're just getting silly!!!

I don't know a a gay person who wouldn't close their eyes and think of england to save the human race, so why is it better for a species to die out then get with a girly penguin... the penguins homosexuality is probably only circumstantial... like a turkish prison!

i remember an add in the early 90s, for bonds underwear where a buff guy sets of the metal detector at an airport... there are two two female guards who are setting off the metal detector with a control to force the guy to slowly strip down to his underwear... as he walks off one says despairingly: "*sigh* he's probably gay"

to which gay rights actavists got up in arms and forced the ad to be altered to say something less amusing...
-why? because they said that she said it like it was a negative thing and that's derogitry...

i mean really... if i like a girl who turns out to be lesbian, THAT DOES SUCK!!!!
nothing against her, but it sucks for me...

Maybe the trainers wanted them to pro-create...

I think animals in captivity is cruel and needless, aside from conservation purposes. Nobody really loves the zoo that much. We could all get along just fine with out them. Nothing gets to me more than going to the Vancouver Aquarium (which I now boycott as of last year) and seeing that poor Killer Whale, all by herself (oh sorry she has the dolphin for a friend) swimming around in a state of boredem and deep rooted depression. Killer's live in packs of up to 30, and live with their parents, grandparents, and kids for their entire lives. Not to mention they travel HUGE distance in search of food. They can live in any climate, they're really amazing mammals. I'm sure our Van Aqua Orca does not miss that at all. GRRRRRR!

Penguins fall under the same curse that the Beluga whale suffers from - it always looks HAPPY! Beluga's have a naturally upturned lip, so you think they are smiling. Penguins are always waddling about in a comedic manner, so you think they're content.

Don't just saving the gay Penguins, save all of them!

It would be abit unfair to the females if they went in thinking "Oh yes, I'm going to get some tonight" only to find out that the males were busy having sex together.

That raises a whole slew of questions. Now anyone can acknowledge that a male can probably pass up a female. A gay male can pass up a very interested female. But the question is, would a gay penguin be able to avoid joining in if it saw two chicks getting it on? Would the females be offended by this? Would the zoo be able to base a soap opera off it?
