What happened to <R> rated films?

when was it suddenly decided that children were the only market left.

SW is a prime example of this. dudes running a round with energy swords chopping each other up... and no gore. not that i'm a sicko, but honestly...

It's a lost art form. It's bad enough that the characters in most modern 'horror' films are unlikeable leaving you somewhat apathetic about whether or not their going to die, but to make their deaths boring is just useless.

look at SCREAM 1,2,3. guy in ghost mask walks up and stabs you.
that could happen to me at any time... I could so that. so what's the point of watching it?

a predator empties your chest cavity with a shoulder mounted energy gun, or rips your spine out for a trophey... now that's something.

i know a lot of people here don't like horror, and are "moraly oposed" to it (which i think 9 times out of 10 is a thinly blanketed excuse to hide the fear of being horrified, personally) but then alot of people are not into porn, but i think we all agree that if you took the sex and nudity out of it, something would be seriously wrong....

Horror, Thriller, War, etc. We live in a world were people don't really live anymore.
people are intellectual slaves to comercialism and market-researched, self defeating feedback looped into uslessness that leaves the common man a slave to his own lack of imagination. therefore... the threat of death, more than ever in this day and age, is no longer enough...
people should be affraid to watch!!!

<R> rated films... a lost art?

many will disagree.
but, horror and it's relatives, are responsible for many inovative discoveroes in the art of film making, and i can't help but notice the lack of such things being around to keep us on our toes...

Yes I agree, it isn't fun to sneak into PG-13 films if I can just get into them anyway.

Movies thats pure focus is the tourcher and death of teenagers by psycopathic killers who enforce a strict code of morality (No drugs No boobies) by any means necisary. All PG-13. Disgracefull.

Bring back the R pirate.gif if not for most movies, then for the movies the R pirate.gif was invented for.

Try looking a bit further afield. Argento or Fulci are good places to start.

I heard the French horror film 'Switchblade Romance' was supposed to be quite violent, although I havn't seen it yet.

LUCIO FULCI! He is my hero! I just bought the 25th Anniversary DVD of Zombi 2 not too long ago. I just love the theme song for it, so spooky.

Watch The Beyond, the detail in the violence will blow you away.

Try NetFlix.. they might have em.

I really like the fact that we still have a few art theaters here in boston.. because we get the good stuff like that.. And like the next film from the driector of Akira (not that it is R.. but you get the point.)

I do miss R rated films.. The market is there.. just no one feels they want to risk it I think. I don't like horror.. but thats because I'm squeemish.. and jumpy anyway.. and I don't need to heighten that experiance.. hehe

Ahh.. if only Hollywood would leave the film making to artists.. and not the ratings board and test audiances.

Personaly I'm also worried because the Winstien Bros. (Spelling?) are not being renewed their jobs at Mirimax.. But this might be a good thing.. maybe they'll start a new studio.. that isn't involved with Disney.

Well, it supposed to be about a hotel that was built over one of seven gates to hell. I have to admit, if you watch the English translation...it's pretty bad. You can tell they changed the dialog just to fit the actors lip sync.

But there's tons n' tons of bloody and voilent scenes, you'll just ignore the horrible voice overs!

I was actually expecting a bit more gore in it, but theres some good stuff in there. What would basically happen is that a guy would get hit with something sharp then theres a crash zoom into the wound. Its all really deliberate and pretty interesting. The voice over is pretty bad though.

Remember that part where the dog "Dicky" rips the side of that chicks head off? That was pretty gruesome, and it looks VERY real.

I wish people would make such movies these days, it would give me a reason to go to the movie theatre every once in awhile.

Theres an almost identical scene in Argentos 'Susperia'. Any idea which film was made first? but yeah, that was a good sequence.

I've never seen Susperia, but it says it was made in 1977. The Beyond was finished in 1981, so I guess there might have been some copying going on.

I think I'll check out Susperia by the way.
