'Batman,' buddies protest for divorced dads
British group seeks improved visitation rights

LONDON - A fathers’ rights group that has already pelted Prime Minister Tony Blair and scaled Buckingham Palace staged a “superhero” protest near Blair’s Downing Street home on Monday.

advertisement
Dressed as Batman, Robin and Captain America, three men used a ladder to climb up the Foreign Office building onto a narrow ledge about 30 feet up on the corner of Downing Street. They did not breach security.

They unfurled a banner referring to Blair's Labour Party government that said: “Access denied. Don’t let Labour stop you being a Superdad” as a crowd gathered below and police tried to talk them down.

The Fathers 4 Justice group is campaigning for better treatment by the courts for divorced fathers — specifically in visitation rights to their children.

Yes lads, its a good cause and all, but the reason I didn't see this on the front page anymore is that... well... you've overdone the "climbing things and waving banners" angle. Try bombing stuff, that's a good start.

Thanks to JM Hofmarn for this!

I saw this one in the paper during breakfast, and I think it's brilliant, except for the dressing up as superheroes, that's just plain stupid.

You really don't want to be associated with the cosplay scene if you want to be taken seriously. That gathered, I'd love getting into the cosplay scene and dress as Guybrush Threepwood.

If they're going to dress up as superheroes, they could at least live up to the part a bit. I mean, look at them, Batman's talking on a cell phone, Captain America looks rather apathetic and like he wants a cigarette, and Robin...no. Just no.

ADDITIONAL: I found a really funny picture on deviantART for the last story, lookie!

Exactly what I thought. You've done the whole spandex and climbing things thing before, now try something new already...

The most hillarious and ironic thing about this story isn't the guys doing it, but the reactions they're getting.

"Hey, some guys dressed as superheroes just climbed a government building and unfurled a bannner!"

"Oh, not that again..."

I've always loved these guys just for the sheer satisfaction of reading "Batman Breaks Into Buckingham Palace". wub.gif

So anyways, I'm wallpapering it right now.

Beautiful. And yes, Robin is wrong. He's not supposed to have any leg coverings at all. Shame on him. But that's what he gets for being the sidekick.

If they can afford superhero costumes and have British accents than why don't they just dress up as women and offer to serve as nannies alla Miss Doubtfire? The one fellow seems to be experienced enough in adding padding to his form.

Those fathers are pretty crafty buggers, they have violated pretty much everything a nataionalist holds dear in this good country of ours. Good. Nationalism can go to hell.

You know I gotta admire those guys. They have a cause that is very important to them and yet they obviously have a sense of humor and a bit of wit. And they're not afraid of heights either. The way I see it is once you climb saint paul's basilica you automatically get to see your son. Unless you're michael jackson.

I'm really glad those guys were happy doing what they did and have found a nice way to express themselves. Honestly I am. I do hope their kids don't get teased by people climbing the monkey bars and unfurling banners though...

As for the tent thing I think that as Chefelf.com's formost protest expert I can add a bit of understanding here. I once spent about twenty minutes chained to a lamp post in rather dreadful weather with cops threatening arrest. We left out of general apathy. You'd think chaining yourself to a lamp post or climbing saint pauls would be glamorous but it fades quick. They probably felt much the same way I did after getting off that lamp post - rush fades and then its on to the next stationary object to attach yourself to and after that another one, and another and another until finally you'd protest against your own mother as long as it meant chaining yourself to the kitchen table! It's a vicious cycle...
