after "menace gate" in 99, I was convinced if the remaining two films were to live up the originals after a bad start, it would swing on one decision alone - who would play the most important character of the whole saga in anakin skywalker. after seeing what looked like a GAP commercial kid play an uninteresting and unnecessary 10 year old anakin in TPM, i was really interested to see the man who is luke skywalker's father and what he did in the prequels.

now, when i first saw HC, i thought to myself "did they get this guy from a fashion magazine?", not only did he look very underwhelming as a would-be darth vader, he looked like a wuss and a total poser. then I thought "nah maybe he might be a good actor". after returning from watching AOTC in the theatre (which felt like being constantly booted in the balls for 2 and a half solid hours) I was convinced that HC was not right for the part - his delivery, his lines and his screen presence were all off and non-existant. so i went to imdb and found out that the other actors they auditioned for the part were ryan phillipe, paul walker and some other rejects. they were basically all blond haired pretty boy actors famed for teenybopper movies.

so my point is, did lucas cast HC soley on his looks (he looks nothing like mark hamill or even a han solo type for example), do you think lucas chose HC for the same reasons cameron chose di caprio for titanic - the teenybopper factor (ie getting more bucks off of teenage girls/general movie fans who after sappy romance and eye candy?) I think it's one of the reasons why AOTC is so poor, and if you've seen the attempts at trying to make hayden look bad ass in ROTS with that mullet then you'll know what I mean.

A pout, a mullet and yellow contact lenses don't make him look "bad ass". They make him look like a crackhead (but it does hide better the fact that he looks nothing like Mark Hamill).

Mark Hamill actually wanted long hair for ROTJ but George Lucas said no.

Hayden Christensen isn't half the actor Mark Hamill is. I think we can all agree on that. He was probably just chosen for the teeny bopper fashion.

why does GL need teeny bopper fan....doesn't he realize he already got them from the OT?

don't answer that.

Besides the group correction that Anakin should have been way older in ep1, I think they should have picked a big guy, like a 16 yr old linebacker who can act. He wouldn't have to be that pretty.

ya mark was such a good actor he had star wars and uhhh well thats it star wars. hayden did only have mediocre aciting in AOTC but i have seen him in other movies like shattered glass and let me tell you he's not all that bad. hayden looks bad assi evil in this new movie. i think after ep3 people will understand why hayden was chosen to play the part of anakin.

hey, i like mark hammils acting... he's in heaps of stuff. they may not be hollywood blockbustes, or even a-grade for that matter.. but he's always cool in them.

he's great as the voice of the joker, he was great in just shoot me, and i quite enjoyed him as a psycho in that film with robert michem and the dude from american ninja.

CHristianson, and i don't blame him personally for this, is totally taking the wrong angle with this...

You really cant blame the actors when the director's last concern is getting a good performance for his live players. Its special effects first and foremost with Lucas's and everything doesn't really matter

I've never seen Christensen in anything else, but I can well believe he's capable of much better acting than what we see in AotC. With dialogue as consistently awful as his, even the best actor would have trouble pulling off a good performance... though you could argue that it's his fault for accepting the role in the first place.

If we had Kershner, or someone like Kershner (because I don't think Kershner is in any shape to direct anymore, too taxing for an old guy), they could have gotten a better performance out of anyone.

The more I think about it, the more I know it is Kershner who really put Star Wars over the top, and it took someone like Lucas to drop it over the chasm...

don't bash hamill, use the force. if you watch the OT dvd making-of commentary (the only dvd i watched), most everyone said hamill's acting made the scene's with yoda believable... i was shocked to hear it at first, because i never considered hamill a good actor, but when i thought about it more, i couldn't help but agree... hamill MADE empire.

Hayden is a better actor than Hamill was. Shattered Glass was a very good flick that he did a great job in. Do not let the star Wars films make you beleive that these actors are shitty. To wit:

Natalie Portman
Christopher Lee
Liam Neison
Ewan McGregor
Samuel Jackson

are all very good actors yet the absolutely putrid dialogue and crappy dircetion they are given would mot allow you to beleive that.

He's talking to 'use the force'. I.e. the person who posted in this thread earlier. Jesus, Hannibal...

It is the director who is supposed to give direction to the actors. It's obvious that no one was given much direction. The cringeworthy lines didn't help, either. To add to problems, blue screen acting is difficult because you have to react so something that isn't there and the prequels were dosed with it, so I wouldn't bash the poor actors too much, but I'd dump all the blame on blame Baron Crapanoida, instead.

I don't remember much about Liam Neison, but I did watch Darkman as a kid. Personally, I thought it was a very dark movie and it was well done. The sequels of it (I only watched Darkman III) didn't do it justice at all.
