i thought this would be fun...

people (actors) in movie franchises who climb the latter...

Robert Beatty:
played 'Tanker Captain' in Superman III
then 'U.S. President' in Superman IV: The Quest for Peace

i thought i had another one... but two actors just looked and sounded the same...

Similarly Bill Pullman...

played the lowly space rogue, Lone Starr in Spaceballs
and then President Thomas J. Whitmore in Independence Day

But I guess he was a Prince by the end of Spaceballs so I don't know if that quite works.

mmm... i meant more within the boundaries of a continuing saga.
it's rare but it happens.

i remember they had a doctor in the TV series neighbours, here in australia... and UKTV started playing really old episodes of it, and i saw the same actor as mechanic who was trying to escapr his past, where he had been accused of murder. i thought it was funny, cause i figure the character went to law school whilst in hidding, as he ran away in the end, when the town got all fussy about it, and changed his name, and moved back as a doctor 10-15 years later...

(incidentally, kylie minogue was his apprentice mechanic)

Ahh, I see. Well within the same series is more difficult.

Han Solo and Lando Calrissian go, respectively, from Smuggler/Nobody and Facility Administrator in The Empire Strikes Back
to General in Return of the Jedi. That's not to bad.

Harry Morgan, M*A*S*H

Prior to joining the cast in the fourth season as the stern but decent Colonel Potter, he appeared in the third season episode "The General Flipped At Dawn" as a crazed general who wanted to move the 4077 unit closer to the front line.

Technically this is a demotion, from General to Colonel, but in terms of pages, moving from guest appearance to ensemble member is a big move.
"I had a lot of different ideas. At one point, Luke, Leia and Ben were all going to be little people, and we did screen tests to see if we could do that." -George Lucas, in STAR WARS: the Annotated Screenplays (p197).

now that's the kind of thing i'm talking about...

like John Mahoney, who was Sy Flembeck the piano player/entertainer in an episode of cheers... but his carreer was short lived at that bar...
but by the next year this piano player changed his name to marty and turned out to be Frasiers father...
