2 Many Txt Msgs Bad 4 Yr Health, Italian Docs Say
Reuters, Mon Jan 24, 2005 10:01 AM ET

ROME (Reuters) - Excessive text messaging may be bad for you, or at least for your fingers.

That's what some Italian doctors think. They are telling people, particularly the young, that furious typing on mobile phones could lead to acute tendonitis.

Italian newspapers La Repubblica and Il Messaggero dedicated about half a page each to the problem Monday. A 13-year-old girl in the northern Italian city of Savona needed treatment from an orthopedic specialist after typing at least 100 short message services (SMSs) a day.

She was prescribed anti-inflammatory medicine and ordered to rest her hands.

According to a recent study conducted for children's rights group Telefono Azzurro, some 37 percent of Italian children are "cell phone addicts." Irritability and mood swings were other symptoms linked to very frequent cell phone use among the young.

The message is clear: MayB U shd stop B4 its 2 L8.

Why would anyone need or want to send 100+ text messages a day? I hate when I get one.

Others include lack of consideration for others, car accidents, loss of grammar and spelling skills, and severe injuries induced by those who are sick to death of their obnoxious ring tones.

Now if only cel phones would explode more often I'd start to believe that God really was takin an interest in punishing the wicked.

Just about anything is good in moderation. However, it seems cellphones refuse to be used in moderation. Most of the time, not a single text leaves my phone. By and large, its only really an emergency contact number, or a number to call when someone wants to get into the block. Not as a person annoyer, or major social tool.

Incidently, my ringtone is the musich from the very first level of the very first Doom, and thus is faultless.

i programed 'so what' by MINISTRY into mine...

it's basically a watch and phone book to me.

i spend about AUD$20. every 2-3 months on pre-paid credit.

100 messages a day... that's just lame. it would be cheaper to call them.

or even... i don't know...

Admittedly I've never text-messaged, however, I have entered text into a phone and I've found it to be the most annoying thing in the world. I just wished I could use a regular human style keyboard. I guess you get used to it but it seems really dumb to use a phone to input text to communicate with someone. It's a PHONE! You can use it to TALK to that person... they're using a phone too!

And I hate talking on the phone, but it seems preferable to using those lousy number keys to write them a stupid message.

I rarely ever resort to talking to people over the phone. In fact, I got so bad about it at one point I actually almost forgot how to use one. If I can't talk with someone face-to-face, through instant messages, or on forums like these, I'm not even going to bother.

I hate text messages, either sending them or recieving them.

You're right though, talking online, or in person is a LOT better. I don't mind talking on the phone though, except after a while you arm falls asleep and/or it sticks to your ear.

At least they didn't tell you it could cause cancer or some other genetic effect. From keeping my cell phone on my hip at all times, I have begun to notice that one of my testicles is larger that the other two. whistling.gif

Hehe! Love that.

Inflamed wrists, eh? I hope all of those text messaging kids' brains turn to mush and they get carpal tunnel syndrome. I'll kill them by dropping lollerskates on them from inside my ROFLcopter...

Edit: Brain tried to write two seperate sentences with the same basic idea but different structure at the same time, so it made no sense. It's better now!

Don't you mean lollerblades, man? I'd hate to have one of those things fall on my head.
