Rings team 'line up' Lovely Bones
BBC News

Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson is to turn his attention to adapting the novel The Lovely Bones as his next project, according to Variety.

He and partner Fran Walsh have bought the rights to Alice Sebold's best-selling book about the murder and rape of a young girl.

Jackson will not begin filming it until he completes King Kong, and it is not expected to be released until 2007.

The film will be produced in conjunction with Film Four.

The story is told from the viewpoint of the murdered teenager as she sees from heaven how her family are coping with the tragedy.

"It's the best kind of fantasy in that it has a lot to say about the real world," Jackson told trade paper Variety.

"Cool! Peter Jackson's directing another movie!"
"What, like a robot movie? I always thought he should do a robot movie. Or maybe something about pirates..."
"Nope, even better!'
"Zombies?"
"Close! It's about the murder and rape of a young girl!"
"Wizard!"

Ignoring the hobbity director for a bit, that's quite a misleading title for a book. "The Lovely Bones" brings to my mind the idea of that series of books about the Big Skeleton and the Little Skeleton and the Dog Skeleton. Kids books. What were they called? Why do I have such a thing about skulls and skeletons?

But yeah, sounds like the last thing I'd take a ladyfriend to see. Might go and see it on the one day in my life I go to the cinema alone, however.

Skeleton kids books would kick ass, Chyld.

Not something I'd go see either, rape rubs me the wrong way, like most normal people.

I'm eagerly awaiting Peter Jackson's triumphant return to making movies starring puppets. This news just makes that dream ever-more distant. sad.gif

Then again, he has already made a masterpiece of the genre... well, whatever. Go ahead mr. Jackson. Make your movies about rape victims, and have them star real people. See if i care!

Good point, Chyld. Perhaps a more appropriate title would be "The Very Unlovely and Kind of Disturbing Bones".

Yeah, the premise sounds disturbing, but has anyone read the book yet? I don't know how well we can make that sort of claim without reading it first.

I dunno...this sounds rather interesting to me for some reason. I'll have to check out that book at some point.
Check out my crappy drawings!

Funny, I don't remember anyone being raped and murdered in 'The Hobbit'. But then it is a long time since I read the book...

Also, I can see the point of wanting to kidnap a human and use her as a slave, but they didn't. They tied her to a flimsy easel for a month. It's assumed they had to feed and give her water. What for? Was she purely ornamental? I can understand them wanting the droids, you can sell those for a lot of money, but a chick who's only skills are finding non-existand mushrooms and getting randomly pregnant, you're not going to get much.

The murdered girl looking down from Heaven bit. Though the comic in question is quite disgusting, so I won't link it. You can check the site yourself if so inclined.
