i have finally figured it out.

lucas used to hang out with Martin Scorcasi (sp), Stephen Speilberg, etc.

he never wanted artistic success... he, like all nerds, wanted to be popular.
and the OT took that popularity he wanted for himself...

he wanted to hear people shouting and chanting his name, but instead the public cried for Boba Fett, Darth Vader, and so on... the very characters he destroys in his PTs, SEs, and coments about such characters...

all this damage and destruction, it's all about jelousy...

jelousy of his own creations, that has lead to the apathetic approach to film making we have been subjected to.

all this, all these questions are a product of this petty self induced scitzophrenic self hatered, all boils down to the publics love of something he no longer feels he had complete control over, he feels that perhaps if the films are purley his work, he'll share no glory with anyone else, and the films will direct the publics love directly to him, and him alone...

like a father jelous of his own sons acheivements instead of taking pride in what he helped create...

just pathetic and twisted.

Well, that's pretty diabolical, barend. I don't know, but I think that George Lucas is so in love with the new technology available today that he's forgotten key elements like a good story and appealing characters. Perhaps he has been so out of the loop of directing and putting together a story, he has virtually forgotten how to do so.

Partly, at least, it IS probably about his ego. Look how he's put his foot down on ever releasing the OOT to DVD. It's as if he's ashamed of it, and its 'crude' effects. He's so driven by CGI effects and the images they can create, and he's such a powerful man, that he can do whatever he wants, and perhaps power has gone to his head. Maybe the pressure from the suits and the fear of failure and the fact that everybody around him was thinking that the first original Star Wars was gonna be a flop kept him honest, or at least humble. Perhaps it was the input of other writers, other thinkers, and the director of ESB that kept George Lucas' more crazy ideas-- the inherent flaws in his execution of a story, perhaps, because as great an imagination as the guy's got, he's got flaws-- in check and safely locked away from harming the story.

Perhaps, in the end, Lucas never was that good of a storyteller to begin with. Oh sure, he had a great idea with Star Wars and its characters, don't get me wrong, but perhaps in the doing of those ideas, he lacks something-- a certain subtle quality, a finesse. Carrie Fisher said that when George was directing, he'd say two things, "Faster" or "More intense". Look at the PT-- all fast, colorful, flashing images, mostly CGI, bright colors-- it's like a huge pinball machine, crossed with a bad videogame, crossed with those annoying "Hard Copy" trash-news shows from the '90's. All flashing, zooming graphics and loud sounds but no quietness and depth-- no room for the characters to breathe. Perhaps it's in George Lucas to strangle his stories with the intensity that he wants in the visuals and in the editing, and there's no one around to tell him "No, this isn't working. It's too much and too fast." When we went to see AOTC at the theaters, there was a little boy crying at it-- it was too loud and intense a movie for a small child.

Hang on, are you describing the OT here or the PT? Oh "CGI", must be the PT. Don't think for a second though that people wern't (and still aren't) making the same complaints about the OT.

Well, I admit I phrased that wrong. Let's just say barend didn't so much ask a question as pose a possible answer to a question that most of us have undoubtably asked, namely, "Why did George Lucas, after making the fairly solid (not entirely flawless, mind, but still pretty darn good) OT, then go and make the PT, which the majority of us here hate?"

I apologize for the bad word choice, but I thought for a while that you were jumping on barend, when I feel that he posted a pretty good thread.

Plenty, Paladin; plenty...

But the little boy in question was just doing what most small children do when they are overstimulated. AOTC was too loud and too much for him. I really, really wish that people would stop using the theatre as a sort of brain-numbing pacifer for their children; they take the kids to films that are wildly inappropriate for a small toddler (AvP, for instance; I loved the movie but there was an annoying toddler there who kept squeaking and making noise occasionally).
