Anakin the slave? Or happy Kid? What's the deal?

Episode one depicts Anakin as a poor slave. A young boy on the harsh planet of tattooine under the black hand of slavery. Shimi Skywalker even goes on about " how this is no life for a young boy". So we are all made to believe that anakin had an unfortunate childhood.
Althougth he was a 'slave' it seemed he had an ok life with a job and a nice boss.
Actually Anakin's life was pretty damn good if you ask me. I would even go as far to say that his life was better then most peoples, hell it was better then mine is right now. He had the free time to build a droid and pod racer. His mother, shimi, seemed rather pleasent and in good health, not to mention the two of them lived in a house which looked no worse than Uncle Owens hole in the ground. Watto was a bit of a hard ass, but again no worse than any other boss. He let Anakin get off work early once too, Anakin was so happy he even proclaimed "yippie". Watto seemed alright, sure he forced the kid into podracing for money but...............anakin loves podracing! So there really is no problem here.
So here we have a Boy who is doing what he loves and what he is good at, a mother who looks healthy and is able to keep an orderly house hold.
Slave? I think not. While Lucas was writing the script he must have forgotten to add the qualities recognized with slavery, instead gave Anakin the life of a normal happy boy.

They didn't seem so much like slaves as people with a hardass boss.

This is a good point. I think if Lucas wanted to know what "slaves" look like he should have gone further than a tour of Skywalker Ranch.
Or, of course, he might have dispensed altogether with the slavery idea, since it's pretty stupid.

I think he was much happier as a slave. Becoming a Jedi ruined his life. Maybe if the Jedi council let him visit his mom (or perhaps rescue her) then he would have become a good jedi.
I have a problem with incompleteness. The Starwars collection is something I must own. The last two movies were bad but still part of the collection. I hope that epsiodes I,II, and III* will get better with time.
* I'm assuming the worst.
lol This could be the reason. His idea of "poor slave" has become perverted over the years due to extreme wealth and comfort. This reason makes the most sense to me.

Yippee!
folks in the states: you can make your own reference guide this evening as FOX airs the phantom menace, beginning at 6pm (CST)
recapture the disappointment. thrill to the sounds of a podrace. Cheer for Sebulba and gaze at the blue balls. If you can't go to the oscars, go up against them I suppose.
not that anyone WILL actually tape it (besides me) but there will be commercials to keep things moving. or, consider it a lenten act of suffering.

she seemed like a house wife to a husband who didn't exist. I think the sand people were the only ones who got a decent days work out of her!!!

The whole mommy thing was a bore. Plus, Anakin going to the darkside would have made more sense this way.

Or:
Anikin could have been a full-grown adult.
