I thought Russell Crowe was a New Zealander.

Guy Pearce is Australian? I didn't know that...

Yeah, Guy Pierce is an Australian. And yes, Russel Crowe is a New Zealander. He did live in Australia for a while, maybe he still does. And when he got his Oscar, we were happy to have him as one of our own. But then he started a pub brawl and disgraced himself so we went back to calling him a New Zealander again.

However, I love all of our Australian actors, especially the ones from Lord of the Rings. We had so many of our fine actors in those films -

Hugo Weaving (Elrond)
Cate Blanchett (Galadriel)
Miranda Otto (Eowyn)
David Wenhem (Faramir)
Bernard Hill (Theoden)
Some guy whose name I can't remember (Haldir)

Maybe if we could annex New Zealand, we could have Karl Urban (Eomer) too and the man who made these fine movies, Peter Jackson. The downside however, would be that we'd be stuck with Russel Crowe again. unsure.gif

Now, I'd like to take this opportunity to clear up a common misunderstanding. Some people think that crazy nut Mel Gibson is an Australian but I'd like to point out to everyone that he was born in New York. Yes, he spent bulk of his early years in my country but he's an American.

Eric Bana, however (and I am proud to say this), is a true blue Aussie. Yep, Aussie actors are the best. thumbsup.gif

Wasn't Nicole Kidman born in Hawaii (spelled that wrong didn't I) and later moved to Australia ala Mel Gibson? I think Mel's family came from Australia before he was born and then moved back because his dad won money on some game show or something.

I like Noah Taylor a lot. I got sort of smitten with him when I saw the movie "Flirting," think it came out in the early 90s? More recently, he played the road manager in "Almost Famous" and a few years back played the young David Helfgott, an eccentric piano player, in "Shine."

Right. Actually, I feel that in Shine, Noah Taylor should have won the oscar instead of Geoffrey Rush. I thought he really... er... shined in that movie.

And you've reminded me of another great Australian actor there with Geoffrey Rush.

Regarding Nicole Kidman, she may have been born in Hawaii. I don't know.

And Lord Aquaman, I see you're trying to give Mel back to us for some reason. It looks like both our countries are trying to disown him.

No one likes Mel anymore after all the controversy he stirred up with "The Passion of the Christ", hence everyone trying to disown him. I still enjoy watching "Mad Max" from time to time though...

Where does Hugh Jackman rate with the rest of you?

Oh, we like Hugh Jackman. He's a good actor and is just an all round good guy.

I guess with Mel Gibson, we'll have to flip a coin. Heads, you get stuck with him. Tails, we get stuck with him. Either that, or we'll meet halfway and stick him on a boogey board in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. wink.gif

I'm of the opinion that where the actor claims their home is where they hale from. I believe Russell calls himself and Australian as did Mel for a time. I think this has changed now though. Either way, I'm an Australian happy to claim Mel. He is a fine actor. Now here are a couple more of my favourites that I'd like to add to the list:

Naomi Watts (actually born in England, but again claims Australian citizenship)
Heath Ledger
Colin Friels
Claudia Carvan

Of those already mentioned I rate these as my personal favourites:

Hugo Weaving
Miranda Otto
Hugh Jackman
Cate Blanchett

A friend of mine apparantly went to school with Heath Ledger, and claimed he was a cheap bastard. Says Heath broke his scissors or something and refused to buy him a new pair. Don't really know how much credance to give to the story though.

And as for 'Poida'. Back in the early nineties there was a skit show called "Full Frontal" which numbered Eric Bana amoung its members. Although he was in a lot of skits over the years, his most famous character was 'Poida'. For those familiar with the term, he was a bogan. He had a terrible mullet, wore checked flannelette shirts(with a pack of winfield's up the sleave), drank cheap beer, drove a rusty old Holden and didn't enouciate his words correctly. Hell, his name was actually Peter, he just pronouced it "Poida". Hence my use of quotation marks when I mentioned him before.

Whilst Christmas shopping, I noticed he had a DVD out of some of his more famous skits. You may be able to order it over the net, if you were so inclined. Don't know where from though.
