so what's the deal with all this leaving Anikans mother behind....

why even flip a cube, a chance cube, dice, whatever. when you could just slice Wattos face off and say Cheers, I think I'll take the kid, the mother, that pod racer, the parts for the ship, and er... some of those cute maintenace droids.

I mean, if it was alright for Qui-gon to attempt to use his powers to persuade Watto to accept a currency usless in those parts... and to set him up with the chance cube loaded toss...

why not just say fuck it, he's a slave owner, and that's our damn prophecy he's holding onto there...

obi-wan sliced off someones arm for pushing luke in a pub... why go all soft and use such a cheap excuse for Annie to go of the deep end...
huh?

it really bothers me.

Too true - and I can't really see Jedi being too happy about slave owners. And if nothing else, if Watto suddenly didn't turn up at the shop one day, would anyone on Tatooine really miss him?

The whole 'Anakin's mother' subplot is completely insane from beginning to end. For a start, there's the virgin birth thing - what the hell? I'm not religious, but if I was I imagine I'd be quite offended by the blatant comparison with Jesus.

Then there's Qui-Gon not being able to free Shmi as well as Anakin. Why not? He's a Jedi, he should be able to find some way to do it even without resorting to violence! And if he really couldn't do it at the time, why couldn't someone else have come to free her after the celebrations on Naboo?

Finally, we have Anakin blaming Obi-Wan for Shmi's death, for absolutely no reason. If we'd seen him begging Obi-Wan to let him visit his mother after he had those nightmares, and being refused, he might have slightly more of a point - but we don't! And it's not as if Obi-Wan was responsible for taking Anakin away from his mother in the first place - he didn't even want to train the little brat!

Guest,
first of all, I dont think Anakin blamed Obi-wan for Shmi's death. At least not in episode II. Unless I may have missed that, but I dont remember Anakin blaming Obi about his mother. He did complain about Obi holding him back, and being over-crictical (all while throwing crap around the room like a toddler)!

And about the virgin birth part of the story, I find it ludicrous and offensive. Not so much because its weak take on the Bible, but more because Lucas is trying
to tell us that this "Christ-figure" will one day become Adolf Hitler. OK????
Sounds retarded and convolted to me...but hey, we are talking about Lucas here.

That is so true, isn't it? And I love that stupid prophecy he introduced in Episode I that Anakin Skywalker would bring balance to the force....

Killing off all the jedi brings balance to the force, eh? Go figure.

I'm pretty sure he says something along the lines of 'it's all Obi-Wan's fault' when he's telling Padme about his mother's death. It's in Chefelf's Episode II list somewhere.

Did you guys hear the story that there during the filming of Episode I's Tatooine scenes, lucas noticed that there was a romantic interest between the characters of Shmi and Qui-Gon Jinn. Lucas said he was tempted to consumate this but chose not to.

I actually did notice some chemistry between Shmi and Qui-Gon. Anyone else notice this?

Would make some great fan fiction?? tongue.gif

Been wondering about that one as well... I don't think George will even bother to explain it. I honestly think he just thought it sounded cool at the moment and went with it. I mean, the Jedi seem to think that "bringing balance to the force" is a good thing...

Now that'd be funny. Q-G knocking boots with Shmi. Who knows, she may have been with child in those ten years. Hell, the child may have been sold off by Watto before she even married Cliegg.

So...

"There is another..."

This is what I would have said regarding the prophecy had I been a light-side jedi knight or master.

"We're kind of in control right now right? So it stands to reason that the force is inbalanced in our favor. I'm no fan of imbalance but isn't it a good thing that the forces of justice and peace rule the galaxy? Isn't that preferable to a huge war with evil and millions of lives lost? Shouldn't we do something to actively prevent balance being brought to the force?"

And when you really think about it what seems to balance the force is the death of palpatine which Anakin does indeed make happen. So here's an alternative way that this prophecy could have been handled.

Yoda "I foresee that someone will bring balance to the force"

Mace "Who could it be"

Palpatine "Darned if I know but I'm loving this linguini, eh?"

Mace and Yoda "Indeed!"

Palpatine "What's this... a clam? I'm... I'm... d-d-deathly.... deathly allergic to... shelllfish..."

Waiter "Oh no I've killed senator Palpatine!"

Yoda "Oh no wait it's ok my force feels a lot better all of a sudden!"

Mace "Mine too!"

All "You brought balance to the force!"

I thought the whole 'balance' issue was something to do with the Dark Side becoming stronger during the prequels. Yet in ESB, Yoda clearly states that the Dark Side is not stronger. So what is it that balances the force, Anakin going to the Dark Side and killing off all the Jedi? rolleyes.gif

Actually, I quite like the 'balance means 2 Jedi vs. 2 Sith' idea. It reminds me of the ancient Greek and Roman oracles, whose prophecies were couched in vague language that could easily be misinterpreted ("If you fight this battle a great empire will be defeated", that sort of thing). But I very much doubt Lucas will go with this one.

"You speak of the prophecy of one who will bring balance to the force. But do you really think it is... this little shit?"
