Of the many director cuts out there, which ones kick ass and which ones come across as just ridiculous? I know the "Special Director's Edition" of "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" sucks like a severed toe, whereas the director's cut of "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" comes across very well, as does the director's cut of "Blade Runner" and the longer version of "Independence Day".

And while we're on the subject, how about those director commentaries that you get on DVD's so much these days? I found the commentary by Russell Mulcahy on "Highlander" (which he shares with two of the producers) to be quite interesting and entertaining, while the director's commentary by Mark Steven Johnson on "Daredevil" is terrible.

What say you all?

I'm a big fan of the Chris Guest and co. "mock-umentaries." the commentaries are generally funny and there are the extra scenes which I can't get enough of. "Bulging river" from Waiting for Guffman comes to mind. I threw in the dvd yesterday to watch that scene alone.

I personally love listening to the commentaries for movies and TV shows, most of the time they're either very funny or very informative. My personal favorites for the DVDs I own or have rented:

Freddy vs. Jason (With commentary by Ronny Yu, Robert Englund, and Ken Kirzinger)
Red Dwarf (All the actor commentary on all the DVDs)
Hellboy (Actor commentary)
Cannibal! The Musical (They actually get drunk while they're doing the commentary! It's hilarious! By the end, they're completely plastered!)

Most of the time, I'm actually disappointed if it's a show or movie I really love and there's no bonus commentary feature. Then again, I'm a bit of a geek. As for the crap ones...well, I can't remember since I only listen to those once.

the rad dwarf ones are great, but by the half way mark, their just sitting there laughing at all the jokes... so it's like a forground laughtrack with the occasional... 'that was fun' or 'oh this is great'

but it's still good...

LOTR extended editions... 4 comintaries...
actors and directorial/writer com,s i've loved so far...
i'll get to the others one day...

but hte actors coms, are so god damn funny...

"Futurama Season 1" has some great commentary with voice actors, production staff, and Matt Groening. Hearing the voice actors do commentary in character is quite entertaining. "Running Time" as a commentary track with Bruce Campbell and the director that is quite humourous, and the same can be said for Army Of Darkness.

When listening to the Futurama commentry, I found I tended to ignor it and listend more for the jokes in the show instead. But thats just me.

I've tried to watch Futurama with subtitles and commentary but I can't keep up with both. The commentary's really good, though.

The director's cut of "Hellboy" isn't bad - a few extra moments of dialogue basically. The biggest change is that some of the music that plays over the credits has been altered.

I have to admit that I agree with Steven Spielberg that commentaries diminish the impact of the movie. It makes suspension of disbelief nearly impossible and I feel like I'm sick of the movie entirely after just listening to the commentary even once because all the mystery has been sucked out of it.

Having said that, and I'm going WAY back here, the best commentary was for the 'Trainspotting' laserdisc. Danny Boyle and Ewan McGregor were HILARIOUS.

Best DVD Commentary: Bubba Ho-Tep's 'Elvis Commentary'
Just because it's Bruce Campbell.

Worst: Invader Zim's 'Pig Commentary' (Yes, I know it's not a movie, so sue me. You'd probably win.)
Who in thier right minds would enjoy this? All they did was take generic pig squealing SFX and put it over a whole episode. What crap.
I finally got a sig!

Although not a movie, the "Freaks and Geeks" commentaries on the DVD set are absolute classics. Especially when they have the actors who play the teachers do a commentary acting as the teachers.

I quite liked the 'commentry on the commentry' they did on the last episode of CNNNN. Chris is saying on the normal commentry how he was so comfortable reporting the current story(on diseased sheep not being acctepted in the middle east)because he has a boat, and then Craig comes in over the top of that complaining about Chris doing the main commentry track.

I kind of liked a couple of the commentaries for Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle...

While its not even a moving images thing, let alone a film, one does have to love the commentary Yahtzee added to Five Days A Stranger...

Director commentary in game. Nice idea in Yahtzee's case, but I'd hate to see it go mainstream (Nightmares of squaresoft\Molyneux self plugging overdone commentry come to mind).

Although I must put a point in for Monty python and the holy grail for having subtitles for people who don't like the movie, and Rocky horror for the que audience moments.

Although any Quentin tarantino movie has to qualify as bad, not due to the content, but just for his ever annoying voice.....
