Doom was released by ID software in early 90's and pretty much revolutionised Computer Gaming. This was because it was one of the first truly immersive 3D games.
It was however extremely controversial. Doom and its predecessor Wolf3d single handedly took computer games out of the 'kiddy' arena.
Reason being that DOOM for intsance puts the player into the shoes of a Space Marine who being the sole survivor of his invaded Mars Base. As this marine players literally go to Hell and back by blasting through hordes of zombified human soldiers and vile monsters from Hell that have entered through a gate accidentaly created by the Mars scientists.
DOOM had a virtually non existent storyline but it made up for this with copious amounts of raw heart thumping action and a palpable atmosphere of eternal 'dread'. Many of todays computer geeks and gurus have enjoyed 'going back' to the Doom world to be scared again with Doom3. Id's latest version of Doom released just recently. This new installment is one of the most advanced computer games available today. Hence I assume the interest in the a movie based on the Doom universe.
Unfortunately there is yet to be a decent computer game to movie transition. Tomb Raider, Mario Bros and Resident Evil have all been 'B' grade at best. They also bare only a slight resemblence to the original games themselves with Studio Exec's dropping certain key elements from the story's and casts of these films.
The trend seems to be continuing with the Doom film. The fans of the film are up in arms with news of the Doom film(currently in Production) be minus alot of core attributes that fans have grown to love about the game. Almost to the point that they might as well call the film something else. Personally I'd rather they dont make it all. Most of this news has come from the films script writer, whom has indirectly hinted that his Studio mangled script will annoy alot of the people whom this film is SUPPOSED to marketed at.
But rather than just sit down and whinge about it Doom fans have started an online petition :

We're not sure if DMOP has been noticed yet, however we'd like to point out that this petition is directed at the people responsible for the current direction that the movie is headed. We understand that there is a formula that Hollywood tends to follow for these types of movies and that is what we're fighting.
So if your a Doom fan or you just want to make a protest about this sort stupid film making, sign up!
* Shame we couldnt do this for the Star Wars Prequels
