Kill Bill was good, and I enjoyed it. I think I liked it most, because it had some strange animation in it, during the movie. It would tell some of the background stories and make it like a cartoon. This is unique. But as far as Tarantino, I'm not a huge fan.

the guy needs to emerge from out his own arse every once in a while. kb could easily have been cut into one 2 1/2 hour film and it wouldve lost all the baggage and twaddle. still, if he did that he wouldve had one less box marked on his 'i'm a cooler director than you!' checklist.

That's all that KB stuck me as. "Oooh! I can spin the camera and change lense filters! It's cool! Now pay money to listen to my terrible dialogue and pointless violence! Look at me, I made a C movie on a Hollywood budget!"

From Dusk Till Dawn was alright, too. Not something I would watch again, though.

He didn't actually direct that, he was merely involved in the direction, I recall.

My main problem with Tarantino is that he tries to coast too much on references and cinema-geek in-jokes. I don't think anyone can escape from their influences entirely, and I don't mind homage when it's done subtly, but Tarantino just seems to be out to prove how much he knows about film, and it's cloying.

I used to be a big fan of the whole "pop-culture analysis" school of filmmaking, like, ten years ago, but I guess I must have outgrown it, because I HATE it now. I think for the most part it's indicative of lazy storytelling. Post-post-irony is a crutch.

but i like what he does... i don't worship him, but he makes good films. entertaining films... and that's all he ever set out to do.

his style of talking to people is far more confronting than anything in his films...

I'm not sure what to make of Tarantino. Most times when I hear him talk, he sounds self-important and like he's superior to anyone who doesn't hold his knowledge of references. So I say---so what---shouldn't directors try to make their OWN original images, etc.? To me, it may be an "homage" but it's also RIPPING OFF and unoriginal thinking. For example, in ROTJ, Lucas references Wizard of Oz when R2 and C3PO arrive at Jabba's door---Okay... so what! Why can't one just have it that they're arriving at Jabba's palace and make it your own, don't try to "look" like someone else.

Anyway, even though KB is overblown and hyped, I still enjoyed it. I'd probably not ever watch it again. Is it great cinema? Nah.

Quentin Tarantino is cool, but little more than a master of mishing and mashing plots/camera angles and dialogue from other films together. Are his films great??
