One more point I have to make:

Why is the only indication that young Anakin has an evil side in this stupid publicity still??

He has a great evil look... why not use it in the movie?!?!

Good point.

I'd like to mention something about the acting in the prequels. Sure, these guys were given shitty dialogue to begin with... but so were the actors in the original films sometimes* and they handled it fine. And if the dialogue was too clumsy, they could just adlib it, couldn't they? Use their creativity a little bit?

*although admittedly the dialogue was good by comparison.

Yep, the only time Anakin even shows a temper is in that stupid deleted scene with Greedo.

McGregor is one of the few reasons the PT are watchable, as he does a great Alec Guinness impression. He was the perfect choice for young Obi Wan. But even his acting in the movie is weak at times, due to horrible dialogue and playing off that damn blue screen for most of his screen time. Funny because I think Lucas wanted great actors like McGregor to under act a bit so as not to take away from the special effects in the movie.

Sure, but Lucas, as directory, has the final say on anything. He says "rolling", he says "cut". He decides which takes go in the final edit. It's up to him to command the best performance from his actors. If he doesn't ask them to do a scene again, they don't.

in the "no, he will not be trained" bit, Lloyd pulls an almost identical facial expression to the one in that picture.

and what about the fights with Sebulba? its stuff like that that helped ground the character into territory thats a bit more human and identifiable.

JYAMG-

i think the main problem with TPM is that Lucas was too nervous around his actors, perhaps because he had such a long break between directing jobs. i saw a few documentaries around that time and in all the on set shots, Lucas looked really uncomfortable around the actors. its a shame that TPM's potential wasnt realised more fully in this respect. Lucas probably shouldnt have directed it. however i think this is a problem thats resolved in AotC, where the performances are much better and the relationships between the characters are a lot zippier and just play better.

Hammil: Was it fun playing Hitler in the LAST TEN DAYS?

Guiness: Well, at least Lucas didn't write the script...

Luke: When do I get pretty Jedi robes?

Obi Wan: When you get laid kid, when you get laid.

Luke: Welll...

Obi Wan: DEAR GOD NOT WITH HER!
