'Pepsi Holiday Spice'
Wednesday, October 27, 2004

PURCHASE, N.Y.- Capitalizing on the success of its first limited-time soft-drink offering, Mountain Dew LiveWire, Pepsi-Cola North America today announced that it will launch two new soft drinks this year for brief, "in-and-out" plays. The first, Mountain Dew Pitch Black, will launch in late August and stay on store shelves through Halloween. Then, just in time for the holidays, Pepsi Holiday Spice will hit stores November 1 for an eight-week appearance through the end of the year.

Both products come at a time when consumers are seeking variety. More than half of all soft-drink buyers purchase six or more different brands and more than 80% of soft-drink buyers purchase three or more brands.

Ok, lets all agree right now that we won't tell Chefelf about this.

A black soft drink? This reminds me of two things. One is the scene in Three Kings where the Iraqi dumps oil in the guys mouth. The other is a black soft drink that will probably be licorice flavored. I leave it to Chefelf, the senior bevorage analyst, to decide which of these ideas is less appatizing. Personally I lean towards the oil...

It's grape, I believe. Chris had one this morning. And uh, isn't Coke sorta black? Brownish. But still pretty dark.

Yeah, the new Mountain Dew is grape flavored. I had one yesterday. I don't like it at all, but I don't like Mountain Dew anyway. The only thing I find positive about it (besides it being a sugary carbonated beverage) is that it goes down really easily. You don't get the carbonation in your mouth as much as in your throat. Although I like lots of carbonation usually...

I think they're really grasping at straws in the originality department. Aren't there enough grape sodas on the market? And the stupid copying between coke and pepsi is just bothersome. Now they have lime flavored coke. I wonder how soon they'll figure out a way to put chocolate into coke and pepsi.

Those are already out. I mentioned them in another thread somewhere. You can buy them for a quarter at the checkout counter in Walmart. Little pouches full of syrup flavoring that you add to your coke. The available flavors are cherry, vanilla, chocolate, and raspberry.

vanilla coke is nice...

but that lemon coke is bullshit...

it tastes like coke in a glass that was not properly rinsed after being washed with lemon flavoured detergent...

i like putting almond essence in coke (and coffe or hot chocolate)...

There is something to consumers looking for variety...Go into a convienence store. There is a much wider selection than even 5 years ago. It was really annnoying to deal with.

I remember drinking a hard cola before, I think by Jack Daniels. Was terrible. Hardly any carbonation.

Plus, a twist of freshly cut lemon in Barq's Root Beer is teh win

I love Mountian Dew, and I've never seen a grape flavourd soft drink before, so I would probably buy it if it came out here. And Vanilla Coke is only good when mixed with Bacardi, as a friend of mine found out.

There has yet to be a modified Coke/Pepsi flavour that I didn't like. I even enjoyed Pepsi Blue's brief stay on our shelves. Mountain Dew: Code Red was delicious, although I've never heard of this "Live Wire" stuff. I thought that Blue was Pepsi's first limited run drink, so when did Live Wire come out?
