I was thinking about the geek/nerd(I prefer nerd, less biting off of heads) sub-groups. For example computer nerd, Star Trek geek, and the classic roleplaying dork.

Other sub-species of nerd? Which ones do you consider yourself to be part of?

I'm a Star Trek, Star Wars, Kevin Smith(Clerks), Douglas Adams(HGttG), roleplaying nerd with anime freak tendencies.

i was a star wars nerd, but now i'm a LOTR nerd! i watch star trek but i don't get emotional about it, i mostly like sci fi comedy: Red Dwarf, Hitchickers Guid To The Galaxy, Lexx (which i rarley seem to catch), i'm a movie freak (i am labled so because i actually know a bunch of actors names), it is my love for movies and movie making that i attack star wars prequels not any star wars geekdom (but then that is only because i loved the originals so much), i'm a big music fanatic, and i really have to double up on the tokien, i am totally obsessed!!!

as far as the term geek or nerd goes, i'm just on 6' tall and have a strong build and can stop fights in public places by just standing up and coughing. so i'm too physically "strong" to fit into the stigma accociated with nerdiness! plus i have a social life. so i don't know what i am?

oh yeah, and i'm obsessed with the early eighties.

I can only admit geekiness in one area: the Metal Gear Solid franchise. Yes, I once made a hand-drawn fan-fic manga for it (called "Dawning Utopia" because it sounded cool, not because it meant anything), and I am sometimes known to make hilarious comics made of MGS screenshots. And I am also known to play both MGS games start to finish just because I have nothing better to do. Although I also know a rather disturbing number of Simpsons factoids...

I guess I fit into several of these categories: video game nerd, language nerd, science nerd, Star Trek nerd, and somewhat of a computer nerd.

The Classic Nerd

This person can only be called the classic. We’ve all seen this person before, the guy who argues with the professor about completely unrelated topics. (History and physics do not mix. He’s also usually read many works of science fiction.

The Math Nerd

A person who knows the value of pi to at least 25 digits and an calculate more digits if needed. He learned calculus by age 14 and finds it fascinating. He probably has trouble balancing his checkbook, because he looks for something to differentiate or integrate.

The Language/Grammar Nerd

Speaks several languages. He knows what a conlang is and has even invented one of his own. Is also very picky about English grammar and has a strong urge to strangle people who say “the reason why” or who misuse who and whom.

The Star Trek Nerd

This person can recite all of the TNG, DS9, and Voyager episodes in which characters from other shows have appeared. He refuses to let you to call the space station “Deep Space Nine,” telling you that it’s supposed to be “Tarak Nor,” the Cardassian name for it. He’s planning to take a vacation to Risa after completing his first year at the Starfleet Academy. Speaks Klingon.

The Star Wars Nerd

The kind of person you’d see dressed up as a Star Wars character while waiting in line for hours to see the movie on opening night. Whether he admits it or not, he has probably tried to use the Force.

The Role-playing Nerd

This person actively plays at least four or five RPGs and probably owns ad-ons for each game. He is probably a computer nerd.

The Video Game Nerd

Owns most of not all consoles that were made and have completed at least 150 games. He is often a fan of vintage consoles and games and probably owns at least one Atari.

The Otaku Nerd

This person wishes he were Japanese and might even refer to himself as otaku. This is the kind of person who wears shirts with kanji characters on them that translate into exp​ressions such as “good fortune” and “health.” Anime freak who even watches the shows, such as Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh, that were obviously made for kids no older than 10.

THE THREE COMPUTER NERDS

He can program in several computer languages and owns a TI-86 (and wrote all of the programs they have on it). Often plays online RPGs.

The Macophile

Someone so possessed and in love with the power of the Macintosh, he can’t seem to see or think beyond the phrase G5. Usually you’ll see his person hanging out in the Mac lab on campus preaching about its use and how it spanks Windows.

The l33t hAx0r Wannabe

You might have seen this guy on the net. He likes to refer to himself as l33t and that says he “0wNz y0ur b0x.” Often misspells words and alternates between capital and lower-case letters to be cool. It’s better just to ignore this guy and let him play with his AOL progz.

The Windowtopian

The most common by far is the Windows nerd. We’ve all seen them him, the poor lost souls. So embroiled with worshiping Bill Gates, he will support the idea of Windows to the death all so that he can spread the wonderfully Utopian idea of Windows.

THE THREE SCIENCE NERDS

The Physics Nerd

Actually knows, unlike most of my college physics class, that velocity is the derivative of position, and acceleration is the derivative of velocity. (For this reason, many physics nerds are also math nerds.) He thinks that situations with no acceleration are “neat!” The physics nerd tends to be more “scraggly” than the chemistry nerds, who at least comb their hair and bathe daily. A physics nerd, on the other hand, often forgets many of these things. Take a look at pictures of Einstein if you don’t believe me.

The Chemistry Nerd

This is one of your more typical nerds -- you’re most likely to find a chemistry nerd wearing a lab apron/coat and watching a beaker boil over a Bunsen burner. When told that your birthday is August 31, he automatically thinks “8/31... that’s close to 8.315, one of the gas constants...” Same with August 21, actually; .0821 is another gas constant. He uses electronegativity as a metaphor for sexual attractions, will kill you for accidentally saying that a neutron is negatively charged, and expects everyone to know the atomic mass of oxygen by heart.

The Biology Nerd

He has wet dreams about DNA replication. When discussing sex, he’s very often discussing meiotic divisions rather than intercourse. He can differentiate between DNA nucleotides and RNA nucleotides by looking at the chemical structure and can explain how the allosteric site of an enzyme is used. He will tell you that it’s healthier to drink urine than to kiss someone.

I just re-read my original post, in a much less sleep deprived state than when I wrote it, and it may look to some that I am either in the fourth grade or a gibbering idiot. I'd like to make it clear that I am not in the fourth grade, and I don't gibber. Anyway, I approve of Enhasa's descriptions, though personally I'm not as zealous in my nerddom as they might indicate.

metal gear solid- i love it but only beat it a maximum of two times, and that's if it has multiple endings.
anime- only a few make their way into my heart, outlaw star, cowboy bebop, mobile suit gundam (not the wing gundams from alternate century. the ones who defeat millions of enemies with a proximal weapon) and my all time favorite, trigun. (although i hate the chibby angry "funny" scenes. i think it's retarded.)
old school games- old school 2d fighters, shooters (top down, and side scrolling), old school side scrollers, and a few rpgs.
guilty gear x2- love it cause it's old school and anime sort of mixed in together.
first person shooters.- not the mega violent ones, they're normally just stupid like house of a thousand corpses. my favorite shooter (although it's third person)is absolutely metal arms: glitch in the system.


but im not really that much of a nerd. i don't act smart (im not very anyways), nor do i like to act smart. i have NEVER beaten an rpg, without codes.(i absolutely DO NOT have the patience to raise my characters hours on end just to hurt the final boss, although i like to do it, the time issue is my only problem.) the only games i ever go on the internet to find out more about them, or talk about nonstop at school about were the metal gear solid, and guilty gear x2.
and i never research about any game i play, or anime, or manga that i read or watch or play, so i'm not nerdy on the specific subjects. so i don't think im that much of a nerd. plus i know a lot of jocks who play just as many video games.(and they arent football or sports games.)

That is a very comprehensive list, Enhasa. However, I would include "Linux/Unix Nerd" in the Computer Nerd subset. They look down on the Macintosh and Windows people with much disdain. They are possibly the parent group of the 1337 h4x0rz group.
