Vwing, the Minas Tirith model thing is just for the gift set. You don't have to buy that to get the Extended Edition.
I agree that Return of the King needed stuff cut out of it... but it was also missing a lot of stuff too. Really crucial scenes such as the demise of Saruman, the houses of healing and the mouth of Sauron were axed from the theatrical version, making the movie weaker and somewhat empty. Having these scenes restored will make a far stronger film - although one that will have to be watched over two evenings.
I'm not the kind of person who'd tell anyone to buy anything. However, I can say without any doubt that you will get your money's worth if you purchase this. These Lord of the Rings Extended Edition DVDs are incredible. In addition to the feature, the documentaries and other extras, including the commentary on the feature are incredible. Truly, no DVDs should bother with extras unless they are extras like these ones. These DVDs should be the model for all that follow.
I'll be getting this thing as soon as I see it on a shelf. I will take it home, wrapped in my arms like some cherished thing... "my precious" ... and I will be estactic with joy as I watch all of it on my computer. You can bet on it.
However, I'll feel sorry for all of you guys who are missing out.

And extras are pretty cool. I had some time over the weekend and treated myself to watching the galleries of costumes, which is my secret passion.

Okay, I know nothing I say ever persuades anyone on this forum so I don't expect this would make you change your minds about the Extended Edition either. However, I'll post it anyway.
Return of the King Extended Edition Revealed.
There is some more information about the additional material and changes that have been made. I'll say it again and I have not the slightest doubt of this - what we will be seeing in December will be a much better version of the film we saw at the cinema (well, the one the rest of you saw at the cinema. I missed out. Thanks a lot, Japan!).

The question is - how long the EE is. If it is still a reasonable lenght why this stuff never made it to the Theatrical Cut?
But the additions look much better than the borish stuff from TTT EE, where we were given more Original Walking Trees from Dahomey and the Reason why Aragorn never Fall for Eowyn (the stew, if anyone wonders)

There is 50 minutes of additional material there so that will bring the running time to about four hours. I think it will definitely be something that I'll need to watch over two nights. Having the movie split onto two DVDs is good for that very reason. Even with the previous ones, it's nice to have an interlude.
Regardless of all of the above, this WILL BE a film experience to treasure... something truly incredible.
The films that make up The Lord of the Rings trilogy are in a league all of their own. And The Fellowship of the Ring is probably the greatest film ever made.
