The latest information I heard was that we'll have to wait until December, I'm afraid. I hope things have improved since I read this though... as it seems an awful long time to wait to see all the footage that we should have seen in the theatrical cut.

Well, it was my opinion that ROTK needed to be cut down, not added to, but whatever, maybe the added scenes will better the pacing, though I doubt it. I'm probably not going to buy it though, 40 dollars for one movie just seems like too much, and it's not like I'm ever going to use the model of Minas Tirith or anything. I'm sure in a year or so it'll come on TV like the FOTR and TTT EEs did.

You're missing out then, Sime.

Vwing, the Minas Tirith model thing is just for the gift set. You don't have to buy that to get the Extended Edition.

I agree that Return of the King needed stuff cut out of it... but it was also missing a lot of stuff too. Really crucial scenes such as the demise of Saruman, the houses of healing and the mouth of Sauron were axed from the theatrical version, making the movie weaker and somewhat empty. Having these scenes restored will make a far stronger film - although one that will have to be watched over two evenings.

I'm not the kind of person who'd tell anyone to buy anything. However, I can say without any doubt that you will get your money's worth if you purchase this. These Lord of the Rings Extended Edition DVDs are incredible. In addition to the feature, the documentaries and other extras, including the commentary on the feature are incredible. Truly, no DVDs should bother with extras unless they are extras like these ones. These DVDs should be the model for all that follow.

I'll be getting this thing as soon as I see it on a shelf. I will take it home, wrapped in my arms like some cherished thing... "my precious" ... and I will be estactic with joy as I watch all of it on my computer. You can bet on it.

However, I'll feel sorry for all of you guys who are missing out.

Calling a DVD you precious? That sounds disturbingly like South Parks take on LotR. Personally, I generally don't bother with extras on a DVD, with the exception of deleted scenes. They're(usually)the only things worth watching.

The precious thing was clearly a joke, Sime. As for the DVD extras, I don't usually watch them either... because usually, they are a complete waste of time. My point was that with the Extended Edition DVDs, the extras are actually worthwhile. Anyway, to each their own. But you guys will be seriously missing out.

My extended Edtions were 24.99 pounds each plus delivery and postage from UK. I believe in the States the price is 24.99 USD, therefore 20% cheaper. I am going to get ROTK as soon as it is out in UK. And as soon as I have it, prepare for the thread - "LOTR - why ROTK sucks compared to FOTR".

And extras are pretty cool. I had some time over the weekend and treated myself to watching the galleries of costumes, which is my secret passion.

I'm glad that someone else out there is interested in seeing what will be one of the most superb film experiences of our time. These films are not your average fare, guys. These films are the reason cinema was invented in the first place.

Okay, I know nothing I say ever persuades anyone on this forum so I don't expect this would make you change your minds about the Extended Edition either. However, I'll post it anyway.

Return of the King Extended Edition Revealed.

There is some more information about the additional material and changes that have been made. I'll say it again and I have not the slightest doubt of this - what we will be seeing in December will be a much better version of the film we saw at the cinema (well, the one the rest of you saw at the cinema. I missed out. Thanks a lot, Japan!).

Thanks JYAMG for the link. I have read the extras and they look ok to me, however, there is no mention of the scenes right after Eowyn kills the Random Nazgul No 5 and no mention of the scene shown in the photograph, where Eomer mourns Theoden (presumably). I would have to see the EE.
The question is - how long the EE is. If it is still a reasonable lenght why this stuff never made it to the Theatrical Cut?

But the additions look much better than the borish stuff from TTT EE, where we were given more Original Walking Trees from Dahomey and the Reason why Aragorn never Fall for Eowyn (the stew, if anyone wonders)

Ah, I quite liked a lot of the additions in the extended cut of The Two Towers. Although, the ones in Return of the King sound like they will make a completely different film.

There is 50 minutes of additional material there so that will bring the running time to about four hours. I think it will definitely be something that I'll need to watch over two nights. Having the movie split onto two DVDs is good for that very reason. Even with the previous ones, it's nice to have an interlude.

Regardless of all of the above, this WILL BE a film experience to treasure... something truly incredible.

The films that make up The Lord of the Rings trilogy are in a league all of their own. And The Fellowship of the Ring is probably the greatest film ever made.
