In the tradition of Chefelf, I'm going to try to hit points not normally hit upon. They might be nitpicky, but....

1. The Rebel... er Republic Cruiser. There are hints of an early SW design in this ship, but it doesn't have the same impact as the Tantive in ANH. The Tantive has all of these little exposed "bits" on it, making it seem real and interesting. While the Republic Cruiser (whose name I don't even know; never cared much to find out, I guess), has none of these. It really seems like simple shapes put together ina computer wrapped in a textured skin. Too simple. I'm sure my cousin Louie could build the same ship on his Dell in a matter of a couple hours.

2. Where are our hallways in the Republic Cruiser like in ANH. I love those hallways and how there was a battle fought there. I want hallways like these. They don't show these on the Republic Cruiser, but they try to show these on the TF ship, which seem so not SW. They seem more Star Trekking. I don't get a sense of the environment being real. And, take the conference room for instance. I swear, it isn't too far off from the "ready room" in Star Trek Next Generation. Did Lucas pull the right artists for this project. Did they confuse Lucas with Piller, the producer of ST?

3. Naboo. Somehow, again, the planets in the OT seem like they're there, like they're more real. I don't know, I can buy Tatooine from space in ANH than I can from TPM. I just know that's a new rendering model resembling the surface of Mars. Am I jaded? Should I not be excited about the CGI advancery?

4. TF bridge. This place never feels real. I mean, not only do we have robots in the background engaged in 'watercooler talk,' but I only get the sense that the actors in the Neimodian suits are just walking on a stage 14' long by 6' wide with blue or green curtains hanging around them. I know this has been belabored before, but thought I'd mention it again.

5. Worse edit ever (maybe not, but)... Again, mentioned before, but it has always galled me when the last time we saw Qui-Gon he was saying, "let's stow onboard separate ships (um, WHY?), and meet on the planet below..." The next time we see him, he's running like a lunatic through the woods. I don't absolutely need to see the scenes of him actually getting out of the machine, jumping down and starting to run, but it would be less jarring. I mean, take for example in ANH, when the characters are in the garbage compactor. R2-D2 stops the compactor, and gets them out; of course, we didn't need to see them open the door, etc., but it's all implied when the camera shows the door open behind the characters, trooper suits lying around on the floor, and they're walking away. Less jarring and the visual narrative is unbroken, easily interpretted. I mean, we have to figure it out, "okay, he jumped into a carrier, he jumped out, evaded the robots, runs into the woods..." I mean.. REALLY!!! I'm not a lazy viewer, but sometimes you need better transitions...

Okay, I'll stop for now, but I have more....

One thing they're going to have to explain in Episode III is Obi-Wan not recognizing the droids. I'm betting they won't.

maybe your memory is fuzzy here but after Qui says that line, there is another scene in the Queens conferance room, or whatever it it, then we see the Federation ships decending on naboo, then theres another scene actually in the forest, then we see qui running through it. the sequence works just fine.

What's going to be even harder to explain is Owen and Beru Lars not recognising the droids, as Threepio was actually working at the Lars farm in AotC!

Also, I can see the point of wanting to kidnap a human and use her as a slave, but they didn't. They tied her to a flimsy easel for a month. It's assumed they had to feed and give her water. What for? Was she purely ornamental? I can understand them wanting the droids, you can sell those for a lot of money, but a chick who's only skills are finding non-existand mushrooms and getting randomly pregnant, you're not going to get much.

Commoner, thank you. I am glad I'm not the only one who thinks there's a problem with the way prequel ships and environments all look like they're from either Star Trek or The Fifth Element.

can we put everything aside for a second... (except for the planet core thing, PLA- sorry, sorry- back on topic).

Owen.

Owen & C3P0.

hmmmm... C3P0 on Tatooine in TPM was bad enough... Anikan making C3P0 was even worse... but owen Lars owning C3P0 is one furlong too far my friends.... I will eat my fucking hat (after i purchase one) if they clear that shit up properly...

bad film making is one thing...

but this shit is UNBELIVABLE!!!!

this proffessional negligence is at such a celestial proportion, that a Doctor operating on an ingrown toe nail, inenvertently wiping out an entire contenent, would look only "slightly clumbsy" by comparison.

this whole circumstance of conceptutemporal desimation is by far the greatest act of malicious ignorance i have ever had the horror of witnessing... I mean, did he honestly think, no one would notice...?
I MEAN REALLY?!?!?!?!? I'll be the first to admit that the general movie going public, and society in general has gone substantially downhill on the intellectual side of things in the last few decades... but Jesusallahbuddahsatanbrucecampbell!!! did he honestly think that this would be okay....
that no one would miss a fuckin beat?
Greedo shooting first is a pimple on the ass of a character in the very backgroung taking up less that 0.00004% of a single frame of the very same scene, in comparison to this ten mile turd that Lucarse pulled out of his hat... Haters of the virgin birth, Jar Jar, even the fucking planet core bullshit, will burn in hell if they complain about anything in life and let this one go!!!

there are no words that adequatley cover this one so...
FCSUUHCNIKTT!!!!

i know what you mean, but i seriously doubt Lucas couldve overlooked this. i doubt anyone here is willing to give old GL the benefit of the doubt but i will say this- give him the benefit of the doubt.

You know, I have been thinking about Owen not recognising the droids recently and I tried to think along the same lines as prequels' apologists and I came with following reasons why Owen did not recognise droids

1. Owen had his memory erased by Obi-Wan, because Obi-Wan predicted that if Owen Lars sees the dorids and recognises them, he will not buy them because he wants to avoid troubles, and if he does not buy dorids, there will be no OT as a result

2. Owen recognised droids, but pretended that he had not, because he did not want to speak about the past to Luke.

3. He was such a dumb guy, that he simply did not remember the droids , and since they had their memory erased, THEY did not recognise HIM.

I believe this pretty much sums up how those who defend Prequels think. I could not find a simple good word which descripes how idiotic such reasons are...
Oh no, I found it - crap.

And Jariten, giving Lucas the benefit of the doubt will only lead to immense disappointment when Episode III comes out.

hmm...well, we'll see. im exicted about it, opening day, right down the front.

As to the question of the droids. Unless im mistaken, about 30 years pass between AotC and ANH, right?? and one thing we know about R2 units is that they all look exactly the same. and considering that the contact the Lars had with R2 in AotC was minimal, we can disregard that as a plot hole right??

Likewise, protocol droids all look pretty much the same (the differences seem largly with color). add to this time lag, and and the fact that C3P0 wasnt finished, i dont think its too much of a stretch to imagine that Owen wouldnt recognise 3PO. i think this was one of the reasons why Lucas included another C3P0 type droid at the start of TPM, to show how standardised the design of the things are.

thoughts??

It's more like 20 years, given that Luke is in his late teens when we first meet him. And how could anyone forget Threepio, even after 20-30 years? Even if Owen didn't recognise him by sight, he'd surely be having violent flashbacks the minute he opened his mouth.

Maybe Owen had early-onset Alzheimer's. Yes, that would explain it.
