I went to the mega bookstore last night after work. I am sickened by what I see. A book on all the ships and transports from SW and each one has some crappy backstory and "a quote" from some "important" character about why the craft is so great. (it does have a V-wing, btw.)
SW collectible book: so much crap I can't believe I used to buy into that stuff.
so I went to the magazine section and looked at the SW Insider. "10 best moments of the OT" article made me want to throw up. And all the drooling and falling over ourselves about how great everything SW is. And more toys to go with the OT DVDs coming soon.
sample question in the collectors section: I have a poster that says revenge of the jedi what's it worth? "blah blah that was a burger king poster, a couple million were printed (downplay revenge uniqueness without mentioning the first big contradiction) so it's worth a dollar or less."
I was real disappointed and shuffled home. then my mac wouldn't turn on and I nearly went Hayden.
I've cooled down now. But I am ashamed to have been a SW freak in another life.

I understand too. I used to eat that stuff up with a spoon. Of course this was in the 70's, 80's and early 90's back when there was SOME integrity left. Sure there was a lot of merchandise just to make a buck or two but at least the original trilogy was still untouched.

the special editions of star wars have convinced me to never have children... as i would not want the friut of my loins to drop and decay on such trecherously unfertile soil!!!!

i was never really into any of that stuff. my interest in star wars starts and ends with the 5 films. although i did make an effort to buy up all the magazines with TPM/AOTC on the cover, and they were quite a few of those. i was glad when they toned down the merchendise/hype frenzy for AotC, it was way too much for TPM, although summer 99 is one i ll never forget.

the only merchandise i care about are my broken down, paint-chipped, stiff armed/legged, one hand that was meant to hold a long, forgotten blaster or lightsaber... OT TOYS. although, the original vader/obi-wan toys the lightsaber came - out of their arms... remember that?? only two lightsabers i ever held onto.
i also have an original millenium falcon - back ceiling panel is broken, allowing full view of the gaming table... which is NICE.
other than that, you can take all the jar-jar/darth maul/dancin' yoda paper plates, bubble gum, stickers, taco bell cups, milk chocolate bars, home-pregnancy tests, beach balls, potato chips, lunch boxes, diaphrams, and keep 'em.

they may be expensive, but they cost the franchise in my opinion.
Little Jerry, I had the obi-wan with that arm saber. It had like, a THIN tip on the end of the pull out saber- what was with that? Of course I was already too old to be playing with "children's toys" at the time (young for 8th grade,) but remember how Principal Skinner went nuts over Ralph's pristine collection at the science fair? You guys got more play hours with 'em, but no doubt- they were great!
