Schwarzenegger Provokes Anger With 'Girlie-Men' Remark
VOA News
19 Jul 2004, 12:59 UTC

Some California legislators are angry with Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger after he referred to them as "girlie-men" during a speech on Saturday.

The movie star-turned-politican used the term to describe opposition Democrats he said who are too weak to stand up to unions and trial lawyers demanding changes in the governor's state budget proposal.

The phrase comes from an old television comedy routine where two Schwarzengger-like bodybuilders use it to mock those who lack their bulging muscles.

Several Democratic lawmakers say the remark was insulting to women and homosexuals. State Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez said the comment was "beneath the governor."

But a Schwarzenegger spokesman says the comment was the governor's way of saying that legislators are "wimps" (weaklings) by giving into special interest groups.

While I agree that using the term "Girlie Men" is not a very professional thing to do, isn't it still the most accurate term to describe Democrats? The same way that "Rich Bastards" would be the most appropriate term to reserve for Republicans.

I have to agree. Just imagine it in Schwarzenegger's inimitable accent: "I am He-Man. They are girlie-men." It's like he's attempting a parody of himself...

Honestly, what did anyone expect from the man who's most famous for starring in films like Terminator? He has no political experience, and it's becoming obvious that he has no idea how to deal with the complexities of real-world politics. He seems unable to understand that in real life you can't just march in with a big gun and threaten to blow everyone away if they don't come to an agreement...

In the British political system you have pretty much no chance of reaching a high-level position unless you start at local level and work your way up. There are plenty of problems with this, but it does have a few obvious advantages: those in power have at least a basic working knowledge of politics, and there is no chance that Arnold Schwarzenegger could ever become Prime Minister.

Also, I can see the point of wanting to kidnap a human and use her as a slave, but they didn't. They tied her to a flimsy easel for a month. It's assumed they had to feed and give her water. What for? Was she purely ornamental? I can understand them wanting the droids, you can sell those for a lot of money, but a chick who's only skills are finding non-existand mushrooms and getting randomly pregnant, you're not going to get much.

I said this some time ago and ill say it again.
I’m just glad that Arnold can’t run for president.

If you think Bush is bad think about what Arnold would do.
It would most likely go like this....

2012- Arnold is elected president due to a computer glitch, its odd as he didn’t even run or president. Odder is the fact that he couldn’t become president yet through the support of movie fans that saw Terminator 4 the government was force to change some policies.

2013-In only a year the modern world is brought into a third world war in which the US and its allies would fight against France and other "girly countries".

2016-Then as the war draws into a stalemate, Arnold would say something along the lines of, "Me crush girly men with big boom booms!"
Thus all the countries of the world would lunch their nukes at each other (We all know everyone has them.) and all life on earth would be eradicated except for an intelligence race of seagulls.

Well, gee. If I was associated with a California legislator, I would be insulted too.

And I'd probably sue, if the guy who compared me to them was rich.

What?! Hans and Franz were great on SNL. Those legislators have no sense of humor. They need to get pumped up!

Actually, I'd be irritated if a governor used an old Saturday Night Live routine in a campaign speech. Not very insulted, since I can just picture in my head an episode where Arnie showed up for some pumpage, along with Danny DeVito. How can he be taken seriously?

God, Jane. How can you ever expect to fit in here if you can't get your cookie-cutter sci-fi/action movies straight?

No, no, no, I distinctly remember a remark they made about "President Schwarzenegger". It's been a while since I've seen it, and it was only once, but I think it was something about an amendment had been passed that allowed him to run.

My mother thought it was particularly funny because it was shown on TV around the time of the recall election.

Jane remembers that correctly. It was part of an ongoing series of gags where Arnold and Sly would reference one another in their movies.

That was the movie where everybody yawned about the go-nowhere action, but were happily introduced to the superbabe Sandra Bullock.

Actually the story of a sexually-repressed post-PC future world seen through the eyes of a man from the past (our present) was told either better or just as lamely (depending on your own personal reaction, in this Gene Roddenberry stinker:

Don't forget Tango & Cas where Sly Stallone references HIMSELF. Kurt Russell says at one point (about Stallone's character): "He thinks he's Rambo." Get it? HAR! HAR! HAR!
