i occasionally downlaod tracks to preview them before getting an album...
and i've DLd the occasional one hit wonder from the 80s...
but i usually purchase CDs... i like going to record stores...
and a DJ dumped a shitload of mp3s on my computer a few years back so, i don't have to download most classics from yesteryear...

I used to be all about stuf from Kaaza, before the net connection at uni decided to confound any attempt to set up a P2P program. Nowadays, if I need to thieve music, I have to do it the old fashioned way, and steal it off of my brother/friends.

For the purposes of this post I will be referring to a hypothetical person so as not to incriminate anyone who may or may not be me. Just in case the the Flowers By Irene van is outside!
This hypothetical person has indulged in a spot of Kazaa/WinMX for a couple of years now, and if anything it has actually led him to buy more CD's than normal. I'm........ahem, 'he's' unlikely to splash out a tenner on a CD on word of mouth alone, but if 'he' has the chance to listen to a couple of tracks first then if its good stuff, 'he'll' still want to go out and get the original.

That's how I always used to play it, the key tracks off of an album that I like, a few tracks from a band I've heard of, but am curious about, and anything that followed the keywords "lesbien" "dildo" and... what do you mean, too much information?

Do you guys use P2P to get music?
I use P2P programs and stuff like that to get music, movies, games and books.
(Soulseek for the music, Bittorrent variants for the movies and games and some yahoo newsgroups for work-related books that interest me).
EDIT:
- If I like the music, I save to a cd (only way to get my car cd reader to display band, album and track name - original cd's don't work that way).
- If I like the game... why buy it, anyway? (unless it has some kind of online experience that's ruined if you have a copy)
- If I like the movie, I get the dvd. Or copy it.
- If the book is useful, I'll print it. As for non-work books, I like to buy them.
RE-EDIT:
This is my, err, FRIEND writing here. Sure.

The decline of Kazaa was incredible. Seemed like one minute you could get multi versions of that time Richey from the Manics played 'I Was Born Under A Wandering Star' on the kazoo in the upstairs room at the Pig And Whistle. Then all of a sudden it was "John Lennon? Nah, never heard of 'im mate".

Which is what's nice about Bit Torrent. Since BT is all powered solely by the people using it, it's incredibly difficult for the RIAA and MPAA to shut it down, no matter how hard they try. My favourite torrents sites are going down all the time, and I was actually kind of scared when they managed to take out suprnova.org (one of the biggest and best torrent sites that ever existed), but new sites pop up all the time. Plus, BT is used for plenty of perfectly legitimate causes as well, like distributing podcasts, or in the case of systm.org, distributing home-brewed video content. The one real downside to Bit Torrent is that you depend a lot on other people's connections when getting a file. I have a pretty lousy connection here, since it's shared with about six or seven people, so when I seed a file for others to download, it takes them a damned long time to get it.
Still, though, there are a lot of decent P2P services out there that sprung up after Kazaa went down the tubes. I use Ares, plus there's iMesh and Limewire. All three work pretty well.

Kazaa lost their court battle a month or so ago, hence the decline. I was keeping up with the news on it on the radio.
