I almost forgot. My girlfriend showed me something this weekend. It was her AP Stylebook. Now I covet it.

LOL! Glad to hear I'm not the only word-geek who likes to read the new Style Book edition when it comes out. I'd definitely recommend taking advantage of the Amazon special and kick in for the Guide to News Writing while you're at it.

Thanks for the tip, Mandy! I will have to check it out. It's not like I write about news or anything but when I want to know the proper way to hyphenate things (my greatest of many really great writing weaknesses) it would be nice to have somewhere to turn. My current method involves IMing or calling my girlfriend and asking her, "Is it catlike or cat-like?"

My parents are devoted to the Chicago Manual of Style, which has its uses also. I guess the AP book is similar, although I get the impression that the CMofS has accent more on the stylistic stuff and less on the usage stuff. But I think if you have one, you probably don't need the other.
Either one of those reference guides is going on my ever-growing list of Good Things to Get Me as a Graduation Present.
