And then it hit me...
Macross and Clone Wars both have space battles, but Macross' space battles are awesome. Watched one last night where a hundred or so fighters all launched their missiles at once, music pumping in the background, it gave me goosebumps to watch it.
Macross has an actual plot. I find myself watching-the-next-episode anyway. A big story is unfolding and you want to keep watching to find out more.
Macross' characters are engaging. They're likeable, they can die and their dynamics make them far more interesting. Like Alto and Michael don't like or even respect each other, but at the same time they're friends. It's handled far better than the puerile "Skyguy and Snips" exchanges.
The villains in Macross are softly spoken but far more menacing than anything I've seen on Clone Wars. The Macross Varja are utterly creepy. And I still don't know what's behind them... I want to know more.
Now compare all that to Clone Wars: Both series use of CGI, but Macross uses it in new ways you haven't seen before. CW on the other hand just sticks spaceships with laser bolts flying between them. Clone Wars has lame plots, cardboard characters and when they try to emote it's (pardon the pun) utterly forced. And there's no reason to tune into the next episode. The plots aren't engaging and not like anyone will die.
The self-declared screenwriter (who has no credits and seems to be sucking up to Lucas for a job offer) who writes for WIRED" guy says *we* still don't understand that Clone Wars is meant for kids. But so is Macross. And truth is, Macross is far more interesting. And this may be what kills Clone Wars off - THERE IS MORE INTERESTING STUFF WE CAN BE WATCHING.
I didn't consciously set out not to watch any more Clone Wars, but that's the way it turned out.
