Fly, R2, Fly

It thus begged the question: Is there anything in all the PT quite as repugnant at R2-D2 flying in AOTC? Who was the asshole son-of-a-bitch at Lucasfilms that thought that one up? Since Lucas now does nothing without clearance from his gang of shit-head lackeys, I wonder who it was who thought it would be cool that R2 should all of a sudden fly?
Why would he fly?
Why?
I know this thread has been made countless time before, but I felt inclined to make it one more time.
Why? Why?

There is absolutely no other possible explanation. It defys all logic and one can only assume GL thought it would be cool.

Not make him transform so he can walk around like C3PO? Why not give him human speech, too? I mean, that's something he could "lose later" before the OT. He could be a multi-tasking droid? How about laserguns and his own lightsaber? Maybe Lucas didn't go far enough...
I've wondered why Lucas bothered with little jets. Obviously there are anti-gravity technologies. Why don't we just attach those to artoo and he wouldn't need leg-wheels at all.
Abbey's right. Lucas is an idiot, and I can come with just as idiotic ideas, too.

If you were being serious, then what about after the Empire was defeated?
"And the Evil that was vanquished shall rise anew. Wrapped in the guise of man shall he walk amongst the innocent and Terror shall consume they that dwell upon the Earth. The skies will rain fire. The seas shall become as blood. The righteous shall fall before the wicked! And all creation shall tremble before the burning standards of Hell!" - Mephisto
Kurgan X showed me this web comic done with Legos. It pokes fun at all six Star Wars films and I found it to be extremely entertaining.

Exactly. The astromech droids (which is what Artoo is) are the Swiss Army knives of the droid population. They are built for space travel... usually on the outside of a vessel... and those jets could act as an 'eject' for the droid if and when the vessel is damaged almost to the point of explosion. I think Artoo is a little above average as far as astromech droids are concerned, mainly due to the fact that Anakin installed a lot of aftermarket modifications on him.
To answer Cowboy Curtis' question about giving an astromech droid human speech, it's been done, but not to Artoo. The astromech droid aboard the Ylesian robot ship in 'The Paradise Snare' (The first book in the Han Solo Trilogy) speaks Basic (English). Kenny Baker (R2-D2) had enough trouble inside the robot shell just trying to stand upright without falling over, and you think Lucas should have made him walk?!? In the immortal words of Dr. Evil, "Riiiiiiiiight."

Not quite everybody, but close. Wookiees lack the vocalization qualities of humans, but they can understand Basic (English). For humans, it's vice versa, but not all humans understand Wookiee. Another thing to keep in mind: R2-D2 was created in the mid 1970's, as was his chirping, beeping voice. Remember how those old 14.4 modems sounded when they communicated with other computers? That's why the weird noises from Artoo.

Isn't he an astromech droid?
