There have been alot of Zero Punctuation style videos out there on youtube. While most of them suck, there are a handfull of good ones, like "Some Puntuation" and "Zero Originality". These movies were very well done, and they both acknowledged the fact that these video styles were not original, and they both gave praise to yahtzee for the idea, and showed they were devoted fans. In the case of "some punctuation" he reviewed Trilby:AOTT, and generally used it to spread the word about great the game was, and give some general ideas on how to make it better. With "zero originality" he used the ZP style reviews as a medium to spread the word about how gamestop rips you off. Ive loved these videos, and saw them as more of an homage to yahtzee, rather than a rip-off of him, however, recently I found that these videos have all been taken down for "violating youtube's terms of use". Has Yahtzee been taking these videos down? I certenly hope not, because that would make me loose alot of respect for the man, but this seems like the most logical explination. If anyone can shed some light on this situation, I would really appreciate it.

It's probably more likely to be The Escapist as opposed to Yahtzee himself.

I wouldn certenly hope so, but im pretty sure that people who claim copyright infringement on youtube are the people who started the videos. Then again, my knowledge from youtube is pretty vauge.

I would guess that Escapist owns the copyright on those videos, so they have the right to complain to youtube.

This type of thing doesn't make any sense to me. Since the copy cat vids gave all credit to yahtz and the escapist, wouldn't that help boost their traffic if anything? It's not like people are gonna stop watching zp and just watch this guy's knock off videos exclusively...

If you don't protect your copyright, you lose it to the public.

I understand, but according to that logic all of the cover songs on youtube should be removed. What's the difference?

I've seen cover songs disappear from youtube too, although not too often. Guess they can't be arsed.

Doesn't seem like it's in Yahtzee's nature to do that. He seems to appreciate the value of using elements of your inspirations to create original content. Probably.

Id really like to hear it from the man himself, but it seems like fullyramblomatic forums has been infested with a serious case of "idiots' (with the exception of the regular posters) so I dont think yahtzee really checks here anymore

It usually depends on whether or not the copyright holder wants to be a shithead about it.
"Protect your copyright or lose it" typically extends to stopping the production and sale of actual pirated products and stops there. Parodies, covers, etc. mostly all fall under fair use, but no one sane is going to go to court over a Youtube video, especially against a company undoubtedly far richer than they are.

It's clearly not Yahtzee doing this.

I imagine some sane people would do it just because they don't want to live in a world where their rights are compromised at the whim of rich companies.

I can pretty well imagine the escapist being scared by such videos. ZP is more or less the only decent series on their site (haven't checked them all, but what I've seen so far was rather discouraging). Hommages and parodies, if multiplied, would make ZP lose a bit of its specificity, the unicity of its tone and style, and thus, most of its impact. ZP would just become "the original" in a trend of similar videos. I don't think the idea is very bearable to them.

That said, I'm not sure how they can put a copyright over a style, or kind of narration. But also, I don't expect exagerately noble decisions from the escapist's side. Besides my prejudices due to the quality of their other contents, I can't say I found the addition of trailers at the end of ZP very sympathic. Nor the whole "sponsored by" thing. Nor the replacement of the intro/outro songs with some dull generic titles - although I'm not sure if we owe this choice to them or to yahtzee's himself. This is not a very attaching website. Petty behaviours from them would not really take me by surprise (rightly or wrongly).

That's understandable, provided they have a lot of money sitting around that they were just waiting to waste on legal fees.
