Me: 5 Days A Stranger and its sequels are fantastic, and so are the other games by this Yahtzee fellow! Is there a huge amount of quality adventure game freeware I've been missing out on? I'll just go to the AGS site and click on some of the top rated games to find out!

(A few hours later)

Me: THESE AREN'T EXACTLY LIKE YAHTZEE'S GAMES SO I HATE THEM.

Seriously though, I tried a couple of their higher-rated games and wasn't overly impressed. Does this board have a few favorites anyone could point me towards? (I came here specifically because I'm hoping the fact that people here dig the Chzo mythos and Yahtzee's other games means we have something in common taste-wise, right?) Ben Jordan sounds interesting but I had some problems running it on my PC and the voice acting turned me off. Should I persevere with that one? The Blackwell Legacy also looks good. Worth $15?

Thanks for any help in advance. I'm really in the mood for some more classic adventure gaming and I wanted to try something new without looking for my copy of Curse of Monkey Island or Sanitarium again.

You obviously aren't playing Yahtzee's games hard enough. Try harder.
Also, try 'Out of Order'. I think that was made on AGS, but either way it's a nice little puzzle adventure type game. But it's not a horror.
If you're looking for a horror/puzzle/adventure, then you're asking too much. Settle for two out of three.

I honestly have no idea what you mean by that.

That was just me poking fun at myself. I'd be happy with a solid adventure game in any form. Thanks for the recommendation.

Out of Order is not an AGS game.

Blackwell Legacy is stuck up in its own arse. I mean, they charge almost as much for an AGS game as bigger companies charge for a mainstream video game. Apart from the occasional buck thrown in by rabid fanboys, I really doubt that this business is going well.

Ben Jordan really doesn't deserve all that phrase it gets. I mean, all the puzzles are just plain stupid, the plot reminds me of Scooby Doo, the characters are all cardboard cut-outs, the graphics look like they were painted by a ten-year-old (well, most of it, there are a few nice ones), and the creator doesn't know shit about places outside America. Yet, I can't get myself NOT to play them through (so that I can say "Yes, the seventh part is just as crap as the rest." I guess). I'm like the guy with the sore tooth who can't stop touching it and go "Ow" every couple of seconds.

Ranting time over. For now.

I only played ben jordan because i saw that it had a "nudity" rating on the 6th game and i didnt want to play it without the back story so i played through the whole series. (Btw i was disapointed with the "nudity")

I gotta say the series has its moments and it starts off pretty awkward but as the series moves on it doesnt get great, but it gets less awkward and at times fun. If your worried about the voice acting then rest assured only episode one delux has voice acting, which i think picked an extremely annoying narrator voice. The rest of the games use text

Plenty o' games are fun to try and some of them are really masterpieces. The first I can recall in my mind are:

- Cedric and the Revolition
- Reactor 09 (this first two games are by Bernie, very talented youg fellow)
- Treasure Island
- KnightSquire
- Hallway of Adventures (short and wonderful)
- Automation

Let me know your toughts about them

Yahtzee might just receive an occasional buck thrown in by rabid fanboys but Dave Gilbert is making a living off his games with the mountains of cash thrown in by dozens of thousands of casual gamers. If you go on Manifesto Games, all of his games occupy the top positions in their most popular list. Also, Blackwell Legacy and Blackwell Unbound are certainly 2 of the best AGS games I've seen last year. You can skip The Shivah as it doesn't really worth 5 bucks, but the Blackwell games are must play.

If you want to know what games to play, simply download every award winners and nominees on the AGS awards website and the AGS pick of the month, you will still miss some good games but not a lot. There is a rating system in the making, where several members play a game and agree on a rating, the scores will be available once they will be done playing and rating the 900 games in the database. Hopefully that will help to sort the crap from the good games.

Ah, forgot to mention:

SSH did a great job and placed all the ratings in a easy-to-read, sortable table. Here it is

This rating system isn't any good. There's too much room for abuse, there around 20 persons who rate the games, there's no way to know if said persons rate a game objectively, subjectively or if they know how to rate at all. Chances are for every 1 objective voter there's 20 who vote all 100% or all 0% depending if they liked or didn't like the game or who give 0% to the graphics of of games like Apprentice because it's 320x200 2D graphics rather than 3D.

It would be different if active members' votes weighted more than new members' votes, and more importantly if all members of the AGS community seriously and objectively rated each games they played, but it's not the case. Until the new rating system arrives, I'd rather trust the AGS awards which list nearly 80% of the games worth playing in no particuliar order, or go through all 900 games myself than trust the current vote system.

De gustibus....

There are some minor fallacies in the present rating system but from here to say it is utter crap...
Tastes are personal (orly?) of course: my opinion is that some great games missed the AGS awards but are nontheless masterpieces (and the rating by some fellow AGSers might help you to find them).

There are definitely a lot of AGS games out there besides Yahtzee's that are worthy of playing. Here are my recommendations, with roughly my most favorite at the top.

Pleughburg - An oldie, but good. From 2001, it's one of the first classic full-length AGS game with some of the best music there is. Don't let the somewhat ugly graphics turn you off.

Duty & Beyond - A very high quality adventure that concentrates on epic quests with gargantuan amounts of inventory items. It's old-skool adventure at its finest.

Automation - One of my personal favorites; a short, yet high quality game that features excellent design, graphics, and animation.

Reactor 09 - Another one of Bernie's excellent games. It's not the best game in the world, but everything in it is so high quality it's worth checking out.

Apprentice 1 (deluxe) and Apprentice 2 - These games probably have some of the best puzzle design I've seen out of any AGS games, and the animation is particularly good.

TilTOR - Not an adventure game, but a puzzle game made with AGS. Great style, polish, music, and execution here. Only complaint is that it's a tad too long and you will need help for the later levels.

What's the one where you play as a rabbi? I'm not even sure it's AGS, but I played the demo, and I enjoyed it. I love Jewish New York culture.

EDIT: It is called "The Shivah", and is not made with AGS. So fuck all you guys. All of you. Every last one.
