This is really a stretch, but the character Peach Wilkins (a hairy guy on the Neptune's Bounty level) in Bioshock constantly wears a welding mask.

In addition, many of the Splicers (people who genetically modified themselves to the point of going batshit crazy) on the Hephaestus level wear welding masks.

It's not really stealing from Yahtzee or even a tenuous link, but it is somewhat familiar to be running around having a guy in a welding mask chasing after you. It's just that this time, you can shoot the guy in the face and shoot killer bees hatched from the veins in your arms at him.

Bioshock is my review assignment for the Wednesday after next so I've already finished it. In summary: not up to the hype.
As I walked through the valley of the shadow of death, I realised that it could do with a lick of paint.

Well, the new Dr Who story, "42", featured a possessed guy wearing a welding mask running round an out of control ship killing people. I was half hoping the Dr would put on a silly hat.

Though, it was the non-Rose version of "The Impossible Planet" and "The Satan Pit", which was ripped off Doom. I was half hoping for a BFG.

I think Yahtzee should be pleased that the XDAS looking one was made after they got rid of Rose, and so didn't suck quite so badly.

Maybe not, but it's still loads better than many other touted "savior of FPS" games. I had fun with it, anyway.

Dunno, I only saw some in-game videos on youtube, and it looked pretty fucking cool. And scary. Me <3 scary, so I'm definitely going to get it. If its atmosphere is any close to its predecessor's, then I'll probably like it too.

I think I saw one where they were playing "Beyond the Sea" or some other old-timey song over it. Looked pretty damned good to me... wink.gif

It never quite gets up to the "scared to turn that next corner" level of scariness in SS2, but there are a few moments in the game that turn your brain upside down. The scariness in Bioshock relies more on psychological scares, especially those in audio diaries (which IS similar to SS2).

It was the psychological scariness (and those sounds!) that made me soil myself in SS2 as well. I mean, those hybrid pipe-hittin' zombies didn't really look scary at all (that is, until I installed that Rebirth mod that made them look a lot more lifelike, when you open a door you'd gone through a thousand times already and this time there's one of the buggers staring into your face brrrr that makes me jump).

Everyone stop saying 'psychological'. Please explain what kind of fright is not psychological.

Haven't got or plan to get Bioshock as a) recently found out about the incredibly ridiculous copy-protection and B) my computer can barely run HL2, however from the trailers I've seen it basically looks like System Shock 2 if the Von Braun crashed into the ocean. Which isn't a bad thing of course, I love System Shock 2.

RE-style "BOOGA-BOOGA I JUMPED OUTTA A WINDOW!!!"-style scares are generally not considered psychological....

Er...what about chemically induced? Or...some alien using mind control to make you frightened?

For instance, a man getting gutted by some ugly alien is NOT a psychological scare. But when you see someone who'd hanged himself on a support beam in order to avoid a gory death by the hands (tentacles, whatever) of some ugly alien that is in the next room working its way through the barred door, just after having written a warning on a wall in blood to possible survivors, well, that's psychological horror according to my book.

Resident Evil is a good example of a game that is not psychologically scary. Sure, you jump the first few times an evil death hound jumps through the window or a dead body suddenly wakes up and attacks you (ZOMG!), but after a while you step into a room EXPECTING the ceiling to start coming down on you with spikes while psychic fanged turtle monsters nibble on your underthings. Or something like that.

Well...I don't really find that scary though, it's been overused. Doesn't really compare to a monster jumping out at you unexpectedly.

Though...Lovecraft is scary...not so much all this "ancient evils from the dawn of time" stuff, but Lovecraft could write a story about a guy going to the supermarket to buy a tin of beans that'd be scary.
