Topics I've Started

  1. What would you do...

    Posted 22 Feb 2004

Someone else here commented that any one of us here could've written a better Prequel Trilogy than George Lucas did. This got me curious... how would you have the PT go if you had written it?

Personally, I would've started the war in Episode I, instead of going through this political mumbo jumbo. The movie is called Star WARS, not Star Politics. In fact that's basically all I'd do... get the ball rolling in the first episode, follow up on it up until it's logical culmination in the events of Episode IV: A New Hope.

I'd also stop using the word "Padawan" which is my pet peeve with the prequels. Since when were Jedi trainees called "Padawans" anyway? I don't remember Obi-wan calling Luke a "padawan" nor do I remember Yoda using the world Lucas threw this in because he thought it made his story somehow more mystical, but it's so transparent it's stupid.

(Yes, I know, "Padawan" probably comes from the EU novels or something... but still...)
  2. 50 Reasons to Hate ROTJ

    Posted 20 Feb 2004

    Hi.

I read this article recently, and I found I had some problems with it. I'm intending to do a full-fledged counter-article sometime in the near future, but for now I only want to comment on this point:

    ----------
    41. PARADOXICAL LESSONS IN THE FORCE: Yoda says the only way Luke can become a Jedi is to face Vader. Minutes later, he says it's unfortunate that Luke rushes to face Vader. This is in addition to Yoda's assertion in Empire that if Luke faces Vader, he'll become an agent of evil. So he needs to face Vader to become a Jedi, but he can't face Vader or else he'll become a slave to the dark side. This is a paradox on a par with the one Kirk used to confuse and blow up Nomad.
    ----------

Okay, need I discuss how mind-bogglingly STUPID this complaint is? Let me use a dose of Real Life here: By this logic, if someone tells me "You shouldn't download files yet." It means the same thing as if they said "You shouldn't download files EVER." That's basically what this point is arguing--the writers are totally overlooking the simple fact that circumstances change. Luke wasn't ready when he first faced Vader, he IS ready NOW. I fail to see what's so hard to understand about that.
  3. The Novels

    Posted 20 Feb 2004

    Hey guys.

Recently I read the novelizations of the Star Wars trilogy--the Del Rey mass-market paperback edition, specifically (the one that collects all three of 'em). I was wondering if these novels have been tampered with the same way the movies have? I know for a fact that the A New Hope novelization was originally named "Star Wars: From the Adventures of Luke Skywalker" but am unaware of any changes beyond that, save that the older editions had more attractive covers.

Also, has George Lucas tampered with any of the EU Novels?

    Thanks in advance.
  4. Here's a sad thought

    Posted 4 Feb 2004

Hey, I was just discussing this with a friend of mine after reading the Star Wars novelizations.

Has anyone but me noticed that the REAL heroes of the rebellion, who ultimately bring about the downfall of the Empire, are R2D2 and C3PO? I mean think about it, not only do they get Luke involved, but they're crucial to the final battle in Return of the Jedi since C3PO is who ultimately convinces the Ewoks to join them.

So yea, great Sith Lord Darth Sidious was overthrown mostly by an inept droid his right-hand man built when he was a child. Palpatine must feel bad about that one.
  5. Leadership

    Posted 1 Feb 2004

Hi. I loved the "78 Reasons to Hate Episode I" article but I found a glaring in-accuracy in it:

"Luke, Lando and Han never showed any leadership skills prior to receiving the rank."

Luke shows his leadership when he plans and carries out his rescue of the princess on the Death Star. Han has a long career of being a smuggler and presumbeably has been the leader of many people (not just Chewbacca) during this time. He also helps with the rescue.

As for Lando... the author of the article must've forgotten that when we first met the character, he was a GOVERNOR, and of a city that was THRIVING due to his leadership skills. Thus there's really no cause to say "he never shows leadership prior to recieving the rank" because we never SEE him prior to his having the rank (Expanded Universe novels don't count, since I've never read them and they were written after-the-fact).

While it's true that leading large armies is questionable (particularly in Luke's case, since he abandons his duty entirely for a personal reason, something which I'm surprised nobody brought up) I personally think they ARE capable leaders.

Now, Jar Jar, on the other hand... He got the rank only because Lucas played favorites with him, pure and simple.
