  1. In Topic: Reasons to Hate Star Wars

    Posted 29 May 2005

[spolers up in this one] <- cuz I'm a noob to this site and I don't know if this is necessary...

    Probably already touched on, but...

Regarding Commlinks: Why the 'f can't they make silent ones? I mean, in Episode IV, C3PO actually turns it off, and sets it down on the counter, fearing for his droid life (why didn't he take it with him?). Meanwhile, his master and company are about to be smashed by a trash compactor. And why would he forget that he turned it off? Why would a droid has a failed memory? I'd get that checked out.

Now, in Episode III, Obi-Wan throws this huge remote control-looking thing that seems to be louder than a PA system to artoo. First of all, why would Obi-Wan be carrying that around with him in the first place (seems they have a little magic bag of stuff like water breathing aparatus, commlinks, etc), but at any rate, back to my whole point- look what happened in this scene... Why would a droid, which is a machine, have the need to hear it audibly rather than a direct silent link? If the link was internal, R2 would have received the message instantly and would have not alerted the Super Battle Droids, and would have re-activated the elevator instead of having to hide, stifle the commlink by shoving it inside himself, and then fend off the SBDroids before he could tend to his business.

Seems to me that if they have the technology to handle interstellar travel, they should've been able to establish a silent commlink internal to a droid. Not to mention giving that droid a voice so he can respond in a language that people could understand rather than beeps and whistles.

Ok, off my soapbox for now.
