  1. In Topic: ZP - Sims 3

    Posted 1 Jul 2009

It's a valid point; when I went through my Sims phase, I started to notice that it was a complete fucking waste of time, and that there was something unsettling about making my people eat, sleep, and play games on the computer. There is absolutely no escapism in it.

If you get it right, you get the illusion of success. If you get it wrong, and your sims are desperately hungry when they leave for work, you'll find it uncannily redolent of Real Life. And after all, isn't that what we're trying to avoid?
  2. In Topic: Plot-Why it is so hard, or only game developers have problems with it?

    Posted 26 Jun 2009

I personally have absolutely no problem with heavily plot-based games, as long as the plots are good. Unfortunately this seems to be something that the gamind indistry finds to be quite a challenge. Linear games with cut-scenes are a source or anger for some, but I enjoyed Prince of Persia: SOT. I think they got it right. Big thumbs up there.

Obviously, as with all things, it's about balance. Nobody likes to feel as if they're being led through a game by the hand, and I've heard rumours of half-hour cutscenes in some games, something that should be punishable by my cooking (or death, whichever is worse).
  3. In Topic: ZP - E3

At half past four in the morning, when the slurry that used to be my brain decided it would be awesome to be really fucking confused, I rewatched this episode of ZP and allowed Yahtzee's words to wash over me in a babbling stream. It made exactly as much sense as normal. Partly this is because the bright colours make it ideal for ages 1 to stoned.

On a related note, I'm going to bed now.
  4. In Topic: What makes the Tall Man so cool?

    Posted 22 Jun 2009

Have I really only posted five times? Evidently my plans to dominate the forum by making my opinion indispensible to every thread are taking longer than anticipated. If you could all just start respecting me it would really save a lot of effort on my part.

You know why I found him scary? Because at no point does he tie you up solely to spout exposition before your 'inevitable' death. Oh wait, yes he does, but not in a cackling Bond-villain way; more in a "You're definitely going to die and have just weed yourself a little bit because this game is creeping you the fuck out" sort of way.

Anyway. My point is, he fits so well into the pervasive macabre atmosphere. You're constantly kept guessing, and I honestly believed that he could snap my puny neck at any point.
